OnePlus recently released their latest flagship – the OnePlus 5T. While most of the hardware has been retained from the OnePlus 5, we did see new features such as the 18:9 display along with an improved rear camera. That being said, much of the debate around the OnePlus been around the new Face Unlock. OnePlus has taken forward Google’s Smart Lock feature and improved upon it vastly to make it faster and more secure. While the feature works really well, a noticeable fact is that it doesn’t use any other hardware except for the front camera.
Now, considering the fact that the front camera is the same on both OnePlus 5 and 5T, naturally OnePlus 5 users were wondering whether they’d receive an update that allowed them to taste the Face Unlock feature as well. Sadly though, in a recent AMA session, OnePlus stated that they won’t be bringing the Face Unlock feature to the OnePlus 5 since it already has the fingerprint scanner in front, and adding the face unlock feature seems pointless.
However, things might be looking good for OnePlus 5 users after all. A recent Oreo build was leaked for the OnePlus 5, and along with the new Android version and improved camera abilities, it has also been reported to bring the Face Unlock feature to the device as well. This comes as great news for OnePlus 5 users, who not only get to taste the latest flavor of Android but also finally get to try out Face Unlock on their devices.
While the official build of Android Oreo for OnePlus 5 is set to release later this month, any user looking to try out the latest beta may do so by downloading the package from here.
