How to Install Microsoft Office on a Chromebook

Earlier on, we noted in our Chromebook vs Laptop comparison that Chrome OS is improving and making its way to become a desktop-class operating system. That said, users hold back from permanently moving to a Chromebook because it does not support many of their favorite apps, especially the Office programs. Sure, there are Android and web versions of MS Office available on Chromebooks, but they don’t cut it for pro users. So if you want to run the full-fledged version of Microsoft Office then you have come to the right place. Here, we detail a complete guide on how to install Microsoft Office on a Chromebook. So without further delay, let’s go through the guide.

Run Microsoft Office on a Chromebook

Here, you can get an overview of how we are going to install MS Office on a Chromebook. I would suggest you stick to the guide so you don’t get any errors during the installation process. On that note, let’s begin.

  1. Download MS Office
  2. Install MS Office
  3. Fix the Shortcuts

Before anything, let me tell you that Microsoft Office 2007 works the best on Chromebooks. You can try the latest versions but you might face some installation errors.  So if you have a copy of MS Office 2007 in a CD or your old PC then transfer it to the Chromebook. In case, you don’t have it stored then you will have to get it for cheap from eBay or Amazon. Make sure to buy MS Office from a trusted seller.

One more point to note, if the setup file is in ISO or ZIP format then extract it to a folder and then move the folder to your Chromebook. We have shown above how the extracted folder should look like.

1. Now that you have got a copy of MS Office 2007 let us proceed with the installation. You need to enable Linux and set up Wine 5.0 on your Chromebook (just follow the first part). For your information, Wine is a compatibility layer that allows Windows apps to run on a Chromebook through the Linux container.

2. Once you have done that, move the MS Office folder to the Linux files section in the Files app. Make sure to rename the folder to something short. For instance, I have renamed it to just office.

3. Right-click on the shortcut that you want to fix. For instance, I want to fix the shortcut for MS Word so right-click on it and open with Text. In the Text window, replace the address that follows after Exec= with the below command. Make sure to change the username though. After that, press Ctrl + S to save the changes and close Text.

wine "/home/yourusername/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Office/Office12/WINWORD.EXE"

  • Keith Toy says:

Your instructions worked beautifully for me on my Acer Spin 713 CP713-3W-5102 i5-1135G7 (8gb/256gb). For space reasons I only installed Excel, Word & Publisher.

BTW, After everything was working OK, I deleted the Office folder in the Linux files folder (step 2), with no negative effects.

  • Tabby says:

I got this to work but with two issues.
Issue #1: Word takes forever to open but Publisher, Excel, etc. open right up. What can I do to fix this? I’m talking 10-20 minutes to open Word.
Issue #2: Between the amount of space Linux and MS Office take up on my hard drive (even after choosing not to install about half of the programs that will not be used like Access, Outlook, One Note, etc) My Chromebook is almost out of space. My question for this issue is can I delete that original “Office” folder we renamed and I used to install from an SD Card in my Linux Folder?
    Thank you for any suggestions.

Thanks loads. I managed to launch MS Word, MS Excel and MS Powerpoint after following your instructions. They are very illustrative.

  • Bescene says:

Couldn’t even get wine 5.0 to install, followed everything from the link in your article and at the end winecfg it says command not found, is this still a relevant article?

you might have typed some error for me in my hp chromebook i got everything right and installed office 2007 too

  • Gilles Van der Spek says:

I need support. As I launch the Office Setup, I receive the following answer:
Error Code 0-2031 (17006) while installing Microsoft Office

    Any way around?

  • John Martin says:

Thanks for this great installation guide. I have (eventually) successfully installed and run Word and Excel but seem to have made a mistake in the linux code for Power Point. Think I have got the bit you asked me to alter ok but there is another line of code after this and before the Type-application line you show in your guide. At the end of this line of instruction I need to write powerppoint or powerpnt or ppt but do not know what format it is exactly or if it needs capital letters anywere. When I try to run it I get the file not recognised error window. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Zafer says:

I keep getting installation errors no matter how many times I try (it stops in the middle of the installation process and says ms office encountered an issue)). Any solutions?

  • Zafer Aslan says:

I am getting an installation error for both office 2007 and 2010..it is the same error each time. I put in the key code, it starts installing, half way through I get an error saying that MS has encountered an error during installation 🙁

Anyone else having this issue? Any solutions?

  • Zafer Aslan says:

I have been trying to install Office 2010 but keep getting an installation error around half way through (after putting in the key code). Any idea why? I have a pro+ version (2010) that I paid for years ago and would love to use that. How come 2007 is fine and 2010 not working, what’s the logic behind? And, any solutions?

  • Michael T Whitney says:

    Hi
I followed the instructions for Office 2007 and everything worked but Powerpoint.
It comes up with an error that it did not install properly. I tried runniing setup again and did the repair but that did not help. Any ideas?

    • Gary R says:

Michael, per ronnielsen1 on Ubuntuforums.org in order to run Powerpoint 2007, you must set riched20.dll to (native) in winecfg. It’s in the “Libraries” tab then the “New override for library” dropdown. Find it, then click “Add”. I had the same problem and this fixed it.

  • Michael T Whitney says:

Great article. Everything worked except PowerPoint. It does not open. The PowerPoint logo shows but nothing happens. If I click again I get message ” PowerPoint failed to start correctly last time. Starting PowerPoint in safe mode…..” if I choose to start in safe mode, nothing happens. If I choose not to start in safe mode nothing happens. Any ideas? Thanks.
