Instagram is reportedly testing a new feature that will make it easier for users to follow others on the platform. Called ‘Nametags’, the feature is believed to work similarly to Snapchat‘s Snapcodes, and lets users create a custom QR Code-like tag that others can scan with the built-in Instagram Stories camera to open, share or follow.
Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that it is indeed working on Nametags after code in the APK hinted at the feature last month. While there’s no specific time-frame for Instagram to rollout Nametags, it is expected to make it easier for businesses, public personalities, and social media stars to promote their accounts on the platform.
With the rollout of the new feature, the Instagram mobile app will have a QR scanner button that can be tapped to bring up the Nametags editor. Users will then have the option to choose from a variety of background options including emojis and augmented reality face filters, with their Instagram username featured in the center.
While users don’t have the ability to share or scan Nametags during the test phase, TechCrunch says that the code found within the APK definitely points at those options being incorporated into the final version.
It’s important to note here that not every piece of code found in APK files makes it to the final builds, although, in this case, it will be a massive surprise if this one faces the axe. With Nametags looking well set to take on Snapchat’s Snapcodes, this is as good a chance as any for Instagram to further present itself as a viable alternative to Snapchat at a time when the latter is facing a revolt of sorts from users around the world.
