How to Make Potion of Swiftness (Speed) in Minecraft

Traveling in Minecraft takes a long time. You either have to finish the game and get an Elytra to fly or you need to make a boat in Minecraft in areas where you can find water. Other than these two methods, you can only rely on walking, which honestly doesn’t serve well. Add to it tricky situations like an exploding creeper, where you definitely need to run away. Fortunately, Minecraft offers a solution to speed things up. All you need to do is make a Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft to move at a faster pace in this sandbox game. Players even know it as the potion of speed, and it works on both Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions. Not to forget, it’s one of the easiest advanced potions to make in the game. So without further ado, here’s how you can make a Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft.

Make Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft (2022)

This potion makes the player move faster than usual, but you can upgrade it to increase your speed even further. We need some basic items to brew this potion and will start by listing out those in this guide. But you can use the table below to skip directly to the brewing part.

What is Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft?

The Potion of Swiftness (or speed) increases the player’s movement speed by 20%. But, you can increase it to a maximum of 40% by upgrading the potion with glowstone dust. Now, since you are moving at a faster pace, the game also extends your field of view to help you avoid accidental interactions. Moreover, to make things even more interesting, you can also make a throwable splash Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft.

When used on other mobs, this splash potion can make almost every mob move at a much faster speed. But that doesn’t work on boss mobs or flying mobs in the game. Though, you can use it on other players while using the multiplayer mode in the game. With that, take a look at the ingredients we need to make the speed potion in Minecraft.

Ingredients Needed to Make the Potion of Swiftness

To make Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft, you will require the following items to complete the recipe:

  • Sugar
  • Awkward Potion
  • Brewing Stand
  • Blaze Powder

To make things easier and avoid clutter, you can use our guide to make a Brewing Stand in Minecraft. You can use it to make and improve any type of potion in the game. Once it’s ready, you need to make an Awkward Potion. It’s a base potion created by brewing nether warts in water. You will need it to make a variety of advanced potions, including Potion of Swiftness and Potion of Night Vision. With that said, it’s time to learn how to get the remaining ingredients for our potion.

How to Get Blaze Powder in Minecraft

The main ingredient to create any potion is blaze powder. It is the fuel you need to power our Brewing Stand. To create it, you first need to make a Nether portal and find a Nether Fortress in the Nether Dimension. In that fortress, you can find the hostile mobs blazes. Fighting and killing these blazes will get us blaze rods.

Make sure to collect extra blaze rods as you will require them to make blaze powder while brewing other potions too. Now, place the blaze rods on a Crafting Table in Minecraft to convert them into blaze powder. There’s no specific recipe for it, so you are free to place blaze rods anywhere in the crafting area.

How to Get Sugar in Minecraft

Staying true to the sugar rush, we need sugar as the key ingredient to create our Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft. On rare occasions, you can find a wandering trader to buy it from. But, let’s keep our focus on the easiest way to obtain sugar in Minecraft.

1. First, we need to find sugarcanes in the game. These are usually generated naturally near rivers, lakes, and oceans. You can find them in any overworld biome with water in it. And you simply need to break them to collect them in your inventory.

2. Once you have sugar cane, you need to place it on a crafting table, and it will automatically convert into sugar. Since it doesn’t follow a specific recipe, you can place sugar cane in any cell in the crafting area.

How to Improve the Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft

Make Splash Potion of Swiftness

To give additional speed to other players and mobs in the game, you can convert your regular potion into a splash potion. A splash potion is a throwable version of the potion and created by brewing the potion with gunpowder. You can easily collect gunpowder by killing a creeper before it explodes or from various chest loots.

Making Splash Potion in Minecraft

Similar to how we brewed sugar with Awkward Potion, you now need to brew gunpowder with a regular Potion of Swiftness. To do so, place the potion bottles in the bottom 3 cells and gunpowder in the middle cell at the top of the Brewing stand. Within seconds, you will have the throwable splash potion whose bottles are curved at the top.

Make an 8 Minute Potion of Swiftness (Speed – 8:00)

Usually, the effect of the regular Potion of Swiftness only lasts for 3 minutes. That time is enough to escape a mob attack, but definitely not enough for world exploration. This is why you can extend your potion’s length by brewing it with Redstone dust. It’s usually found near the bedrock level, but you can check our in-depth Minecraft ore distribution guide to understand what level holds the Redstone ore.

Redstone Dust in Brewing Stand in Minecraft

Once you get Redstone dust, put it in the main cell of the Brewing Stand with the potion bottles at the bottom. Then, you will have an 8-minute Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft within a few seconds. With Redstone dust, the potion’s effects last for 8 minutes instead of merely three. But, that’s not the only way to improve this potion’s effects.

Increase Speed by Another 20% in Potion of Swiftness

A standard Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft increases the player’s movement speed by 20%. But you can push it a level higher by adding Glowstone dust to the potion for an additional 20% speed. You can get Glowstone dust by breaking Glowstone blocks, which are common in the Nether dimension.

Once you have the Glowstone dust, you need to place it in the Brewing stand’s top cell with the potion in the bottom cells. Then, your level 2 Potion of Swiftness with increased speed effects will be ready within a few seconds. Do keep in mind that you can not apply both Redstone and Glowstone dust to the same potion bottle.

Easiest Way to Make Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft

Whether it’s an open field or the best mountain seeds in Minecraft 1.18, you are now ready to explore every at a faster pace. Not to forget, using this potion can be a little risky in the Nether due to the risk of falling into lava. So, you should also make a Potion of Fire Resistance for additional support. A Potion of Swiftness fits well with the theme of many Minecraft speed runs. Though, you won’t get time to make a potion in that scenario. However, you can still use the best Minecraft mods for some additional support. But don’t forget to install Forge in Minecraft to run these mods. Mods or not, potion-making is an adventurous task in the game. If you know about any other cool potions, do share its recipe with our readers in the comments section.
