How to Enable Dark Mode in YouTube (2024 Guide)

In Short
  • Even if your phone's general appearance is in light mode, you can choose to keep YouTube specifically in light mode.
  • To do so on Android and iOS, head over to the YouTube app -> Profile icon -> Settings cogwheel -> General -> Appearance -> Dark theme.
  • On the web, visit YouTube on any browser -> Profile icon -> Appearance -> Dark theme.

If you are someone who likes to keep their phone in light mode at all times, it’s good for most part of the day. However, if you like to binge YouTube videos at night, that light mode may be a tad too blinding. So, you can choose to keep your YouTube specifically in dark mode if you want. You can do so easily on both the Android and iOS apps as well as on the Web. If you’re unaware of how to do it, here’s a detailed guide on how to enable dark mode on YouTube.

Turn on YouTube Dark Mode on Android and iOS

The way to turn on Dark Mode in YouTube on both Android and iOS is the same. So, we used an Android device to outline the steps. Here’s a rundown:

  • Open the YouTube mobile app and tap on your Profile icon in the bottom right.
  • Then, tap on the Settings cogwheel icon at the top right and select General.
Heading over to General tab on YouTube Android app
  • When in General, tap on Appearance and select Dark theme from here.

That will instantly toggle on dark mode for your YouTube mobile app. However, on the web, the process is simpler and takes just a couple of clicks. That brings us to the next section.

Turn on YouTube Dark Mode on Web

Once you head over to YouTube on your desired web browser, follow these steps:

  • On your YouTube home screen, click on your Profile icon at the top right.
  • From the drop-down menu, you will see the Appearance panel, which also lists the currently active mode. Click on it.
  • Finally, select Dark theme from the three options and YouTube will reload into dark mode.

And, just like that, you can easily turn on dark mode for YouTube across the different platforms. While that’s it for this one, we do have dedicated guides for how to go frame by frame on YouTube videos, how to download YouTube videos on Android, how to delete your YouTube Channel, and more.
