Before the blazing battle of the dragons began, there was an important conversation between the brothers Aegon and Aemond in Valyrian. Aegon confronted Aemond about how he could plan something with Ser Criston without consulting him first. Aemond sneered at his brother for playing the King’s role so fatuously and so he decided to take this matter into his own hands. Thus, Aemond’s desire to take over and play the ‘Game of Thrones’ could be felt clearly in this scene.

Upon being belittled by his own brother and mother, Aegon reverts back to his old plan, which was to fight on the front lines bravely with his dragon. Thus, he took his golden dragon, Sunfyre, and flew to the castle of Rook’s Rest, where he would eventually face his brother Aemond.

Aegon’s unwanted presence at the battle inadvertently crumpled the ultimate plan of Aemond and Criston Cole. Aemond became furious upon seeing Aegon in the skies and remarked how idiotic he was in Valyrian. Aegon was an inexperienced dragon rider and fought against the highly experienced Princess Rhaenys and her Red Queen dragon, Meleys. Thus, as expected he was in a losing position as Rhaenys dominated him with Meleys. This is when we thought Aemond would come to the rescue, but did he? He didn’t undoubtedly, as he took advantage of this situation and commanded his Vhagar to unleash the fire at them. He did this despite him knowing that his brother Aegon would also be caught up in this turmoil.

Fun Fact: Nothing in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire novel suggested that Aemond targetted Aegon intentionally. Thus, this moment is rather a change the writers wanted to be included in this show evidently.
