One of the biggest questions surrounding GTA 6 isn’t how chaotic Vice City will be, but whether you can explore the map alongside friends on different platforms. This means PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players teaming up to cause chaos around Leonida. But will GTA 6 have cross-platform support at launch? Here’s everything you need to know about the feature and Rockstar’s history with it.
Is GTA 6 Going to Have Cross-Play?
At the time of writing, Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed cross-platform support for GTA 6. Neither the developers nor the head of the company has announced a cross-play feature that would let players on different consoles join the same multiplayer session.
The most important detail you might be missing here is that Rockstar has officially described Grand Theft Auto 6 as a single-player experience at launch. So, it would be wrong to assume that GTA 6 will have multiplayer mode at launch in the first place, let alone crossplay. Rockstar could announce online features in the future, but there is currently no official confirmation of a GTA 6 Online mode, its launch plans, or even crossplay support.
GTA 6 Crossplay vs Cross-Progression
Cross-play and cross-progression are often used interchangeably in these discussions; however, they have a major difference, as clear as day and night cycles in GTA 6.
While crossplay means players on different platforms can play together, cross-progression means the progress carries over between two supported platforms. For cross-progression or cross-save, a saved character on a console, say, Xbox, can be moved to another platform, suppose, PlayStation.

Rockstar’s History of Crossplay Support
Historically, Rockstar has kept its online games separated by platform. GTA Online doesn’t offer cross-play support between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Its different console generations also operated separately for multiplayer, even though Rockstar has provided migration options for eligible players upgrading within the same console family.
The studio hasn’t implemented cross-platform support in any previous GTA game, so GTA 6 will likely follow suit. When GTA 6 launches on PC next year, as recent reports suggest, it would not automatically mean that PC players could join those playing multiplayer servers on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Could Rockstar’s Roleplay Plans Change with GTA 6 Cross-Platform Support?
If you’re hoping for GTA 6 cross-platform support, the development of Rockstar’s growing relationship with the GTA roleplay community is worth watching.
For years, creators used FiveM and RedM to build custom multiplayer experiences around GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar officially bought Cfx.re, the team behind those platforms, in 2023, and also announced its support for NoPixel V recently.
These developments show how Rockstar is invested in creator-led experiences and the infrastructure surrounding roleplay.
However, that alone doesn’t establish that GTA 6 will include built-in roleplay servers, a multiplayer platform, or cross-platform matchmaking. Sadly, we can only speculate on GTA 6 being cross-platform until we get concrete information from Rockstar Games.
But Rockstar is bringing dedicated GTA 6 RP mechanics to the single-player mode. In November 2026’s Edge Magazine issue, Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut revealed that players can treat the campaign as a roleplay experience where Jason and Lucia can purchase cigarettes and beer from local shops and use GTA 6’s public transportation to roam around Leonida.
