Apple Releases MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max Chipsets and MacBook Air M5

On the second day of Apple’s March “Big Week” event, Apple announced the new MacBook Pro, powered by the new M5 Pro and the M5 Max processor. Even the MacBook Air gets a refresh with the M5 chipset on board, along with subtle improvements, while most of the hardware remains the same. Here’s everything new with the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air, along with their pricing and availability.

MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max: Specifications

Apple updated the MacBook Pro with the M5 chipset in October of last year. Now, the Cupertino giant is introducing the M5 Pro and the M5 Max variants too. These are ultra-high-performance chipsets, which bring a significant performance jump to the MacBook Pro.

Starting with the M5 Pro, it features a 15-core CPU and a 16-core GPU coupled with 24GB unified memory. Higher models increase the RAM pool to up to 64GB. The newer processor also supports a higher bandwidth speed of 307 GB/s.

On the other hand, M5 Max offers an even beefier 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU (upgradeable to 40-core GPU) with a 32GB unified memory in the base model, and goes all the way up to 128GB in top tier variant. It doubles the bandwidth of M5 Pro, with 614 GB/s speeds.

Besides the chipset, both the new laptops get 3 Thunderbolt 5 ports, capable of speeds up to 80 GB/s. Plus, it also adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6support. In terms of battery life, the M5 Pro model lasts up to 22 hours on a single charge, while the M5 Max drops to only 20 hours.

MacBook Air M5: Specifications

The MacBook Air also receives a spec bump to the new M5 chipset, with a 10-core CPU and 8-core GPU that can go up to 10-cores in top variants. The new processor adds Neural accelerators for better AI task handling and faster memory bandwidth at 153 GB/s over the 120 GB/s of the M4.

It also brings support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The base storage also now starts at 512 GB, which is a massive improvement over the previous generation. But apart from that, the rest of the specs haven’t changed.

New Studio Display and Studio Display XDR

In a surprising turn of events, Apple has also refreshed its Mac display lineup. The base Studio Display now gets Thunderbolt 5 support.

The company has also released Studio Display XDR, which could be a successor to Pro Display XDR. It comes with a 27″ 5K Retina XDR mini-LED display, 120 Hz refresh rate, Over 2,000 local dimming zones, higher 2000 nits peak brightness and the aforementioned Thunderbolt 5 support.

M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro: Price and Availability

The 14-inch base model of the M5 Pro MacBook Pro will start at $1699 with 24GB RAM and 1 TB storage, while the 16-inch model starts at $2699.

Meanwhile, the 14-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro starts at $3599 with 32GB of memory and 2 TB of storage. The 16-inch models are available from $3899.

Both models will be available in Black and Silver color options and will be available to order from Apple’s official website starting today.

M5 MacBook Air: Price and Availability

The 13-inch M5 MacBook Air starts at $1099, and the 15-inch option arrives at $1299. It will be available in 4 different colorways: Starlight, Sky Blue, Midnight, and Silver. You can buy it from today through Apple’s website.
