YouTube’s New Dream Screen Feature Lets You Create AI Backgrounds for Shorts

In Short
  • "Dream Screen" is a new AI-powered feature for YouTube Shorts creators.
  • It allows you to create custom AI-powered image and video backgrounds based on text prompts.
  • Users can choose from different styles available, such as claymation, vintage, and more.

Short-form video content has been booming on YouTube ever since it was introduced on the platform. I know this because I am someone one who spends hours on end scrolling through them, finding it hard to put down my phone. Well, it looks like Google is making them more fun with a new AI Dream Screen feature for YouTube Shorts.

Hands-On With YouTube Shorts Dream Screen

At the “Google for India” event, the company revealed a new Dream Screen feature. Just like its name, it can transport you to any place of your dreams, by letting you create custom backgrounds with the help of generative AI. We got a bit of a hands-on experience during the event, and it’s way cooler up close.

All you have to do is go to the YouTube app > + icon > Green Screen option, then select Dream Screen and type out the description of what you want. Google advises you to be as detailed as possible with the prompt so you get the best results. My colleague Sagnik just went with the plain old cat, and it created an image within seconds with four options to pick from.

You can also select between different styles like claymation, vintage, and more. Then just hit create and wait as AI brings your Dream Screen to life. All of it happens in a very small amount of time, which is what surprised me the most.

It’s a Dream Come True for Creators

Creators are already pretty creative with Shorts, as they manage to tell a whole story in a small time window. This new feature will let them be more expressive with their work, and come with all sorts of new content.

I can already imagine my YouTube Shorts feed piling up with videos that have an AI-generated background. I’ve come across several creators who use AI to mimic the voices of popular celebrities and public figures to make them say something funny or stupid. So it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think that AI Dream Screen will be used similarly. I just can’t wait for new AI-generated brain rot content on YouTube.

More AI Content on the Way

Dream Screen will soon make its way to the YouTube app, and will be accessible via the Green Screen option. I am usually pretty skeptical about such AI additions to any apps, as mostly they are half-baked. But after getting hands-on with it, I can confidently say that Google took its time to work on it, and it looks pretty promising in my opinion.

It opens up a window for creators to try out new things and makes AI more accessible to people. Which is what Google is aiming for at the end of the day. After the introduction of this feature, there will be a surge of AI content on the platform for sure given the wide appeal of Shorts.
