NYT Connections is a widely played daily game where you categorize words into four groups based on themes. There is no set order for finding the categories in Connections. You can select four words that seem to have a relation or try to find the moderately complex ones. While solving, we often find the Blue and Green color group before finding other colors. That’s possibly because of control and not falling into the trap of the ‘One Away’ message, one of the most common Connections mistakes that we see players make.
Most players save the Purple category for last, but my colleague Sanmay sometimes manages to find the Purple category first, amazing me and my fellow puzzle solvers. The purple category is so vague at times that you’ll need to find the other three categories first. This leaves you with four words that, once you select, will reveal the purple category.
We have been solving NYT Connections for months, and there’s a simpler explanation for the colors and the relevant category. We have noticed that Connections uses colors to represent how easy or difficult it is to pinpoint the category.
How to Solve NYT Connections With the Help of Colors
Now that you know about category colors, it’s time to solve the Connections puzzle using them. But before proceeding further, you must learn how to play NYT Connections, including the working of the game – the basic rules and mechanics – if you aren’t familiar already.
NYT Connections rewards pattern recognition and strategy skills, and the category colors are an extension of it. So, we recommend you first try to find the Yellow category. It’s the easiest, and the words have simpler connections. Trust your instincts on this one, but be wary too, because the NYT puzzle editors do try to deceive you.
Once you find the Yellow group, you’re left with 12 words in the 4 x 4 grid. Solving the easiest group first will boost your confidence. You can now focus on the Green and Blue groups. The game is going to get trickier now.
You need to find the next set of words that have a connection. Don’t worry if you fail an attempt. Use the ‘Shuffle‘ button if you are unable to spot any relationship between words. It will give you a new perspective, allowing you to solve for the next group.
This way, you can solve for the more complex categories if you eliminate the easier ones. But don’t wake up your neighbors in celebration at midnight if you manage to locate the Purple category first.

How to Analyze Performance Using Connections Bot
Color-coded categories are good and all, but they only tell the difficulty of the word group. They are not going to help you get better at NYT Connections.
