Peacemaker Season 2 Finale: James Gunn Fooled Us All and Not In a Good Way

In Short
  • The Peacemaker Season 2 finale was somewhat of a letdown, considering the hype created around it.
  • While the finale did set up a lot for the future of the DCU, it failed to stand out on its own.
  • The finale of Peacemaker Season 2 was nowhere close to being as grand as it was supposed to be, according to James Gunn.

Peacemaker Season 2 has finally completed its run, and when I say it left kind of an unsavoury taste in my mouth, I think I speak for a lot of people. Even before the series was released, James Gunn had been hyping the finale as something that would blow the audience away. He even confirmed that the last 3 episodes were not revealed to the media to maintain secrecy, and when you hype something up to such an extent, the expectations are bound to skyrocket. While Peacemaker Season 2 Finale does set up promising prospects for the DCU in itself, was it worth all the hype? Let’s talk about it.

Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 8 Was Disappointing to Say the Least

According to James Gunn, the episode in question would turn out to be “The craziest, wildest, most insane and wonderful episode”. However, Season 2, Episode 8 turned out to be somewhat of a letdown. As I said above, James Gunn built a hype that was way too much for what this episode had to offer.

The story tries to give us a happy ending for Chris, where he has managed to find somewhere to belong, and things are looking good between him and Harcourt, but it was quite short-lived, as he was thrown into the interdimensional prison, Salvation. The whole point of this episode was the last 20 minutes, and everything else we saw happening felt like a buildup to this very moment.

Does Peacemaker Season 2 Finale Set Up Man of Tomorrow?

There are aspects to the episode that connect to the larger DCU and give us somewhat of a roadmap to where it is headed. We get to see Big Belly Burgers, the Justice League, especially Superman’s favourite fast food joint, and we get to see the 11th Street Kids set up ‘Checkmate’, a secret organisation in DC comics that was instrumental in the events of Infinite Crisis.

James Gunn said that the Peacemaker Season 2 finale will directly lead us to Man of Tomorrow. However, with the events shown in the finale, it is not clear how it would do that. We were expecting a cameo from Superman, especially when photos of David Corenswet surfaced at the set of Peacemaker.

As of now, it is not clear how Peacemaker Season 2 sets up Man of Tomorrow.

The highlight of this episode, Salvation, is the main thing we have to look out for. It takes us to the comic run of JLA Salvation Run. In this DC comic, we see that villains like Lex Luthor and The Joker are locked up in Salvation and form alliances to find a way home. There’s more to that story, but in essence, everything that makes the Peacemaker Season 2 finale “Crazy” might not even be visible to the regular Joe.

People who know and remember DC Comics might have a blast knowing of the possibility it offers, but for a casual watcher, the finale makes no sense. To sum it all up, certain reveals in the finale make it important, but none of it is branched out enough to let fans have some certainty. So, with that being said, I firmly believe that the Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 8 did not live up to the hype in any way or form.
