Loki’s Snake Eyes in One Piece

The backstory of King Harald is underway in the One Piece manga at the moment. While uncovering the untold story of Elbaf’s noble king, the birth of Loki, the prince of Elbaf, was also addressed in the backstory. The elder council denied the legitimacy of King Harald’s union with Ida, a woman outside the ancient giant bloodline. So, King Harald was bound by royal duty to wed Estrid, a noble woman from Brewers Village, at the elder’s decree.

Together, they birthed Loki sixty-three years before the current events in One Piece. Unfortunately, the king was away during the birth and couldn’t meet the prince the day he was born. On the other hand, Estrid had a look at her newborn and declared he was a cursed child. Yes, Loki’s mother herself claimed him as a monster due to his mysterious eyes.

Loki’s eyes featured a strange design resembling a snake’s or a cat’s eyes, with vertical pupils. Since Loki’s parents have ancient blood in their veins, this could have resulted in Loki completely claiming the characteristics of an ancient giant. We know about the devilish horns of the ancient giants; could it be the case that they possessed reptilian eyes with slit pupils?

Horrified by what she had birthed, Estrid tossed Loki into the underworld the day he was born. This incident seemed to have been drawn from Greek mythology, where Hera threw off her child, Hephaestus, from Mount Olympus as she repulsed her child’s appearance, akin to Estrid.

It is also revealed that Estrid was the one who prophesied that her son, Loki, would slay his father in cold blood in the future, which mirrored Oedipus’s tragedy in Greek Mythology as well.

Although the Elbaf arc has been primarily inspired by Norse mythology, Oda’s character has always been forged by the legends of different mythologies. Fans have also begun to compare Loki to Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, a Viking warrior who had a mysterious mark in his eyes. So, does Loki possess any power in his eyes? Let’s find out why Loki has his eyes covered next.

Oda has not revealed Loki’s powers in the story yet. However, fans are coming up with new theories for what Loki’s devil fruit could be. But one vital aspect of Loki’s power that fans often fail to notice is his incredible Observation Haki skill. The prince of Elbaf is highly proficient in Observation Haki, and Oda has always hinted that since the inception of the Elbaf arc.

For starters, we know that Loki has covered his eyes with bandages since he was just a kid. Despite that, he is well aware of his surroundings, dodging properly when Luffy and God’s Knights attacked him in the underworld. Even though he was blindfolded, he was able to differentiate Shamrock from his twin Shanks when they met.

In a recent One Piece chapter, Loki was the only other character besides Luffy to notice Chopper and Gaban falling from the Sun World. Thus, Loki is one of the exceptionally skilled Observation Haki users in the One Piece world. Now, this makes us wonder whether Loki’s gifted eyes enabled him to look far into the future, way more than any other character could. So, Loki could foresee events long before they came to pass through his otherworldly eyes.

Being overwhelmed by such an almighty power in his eyes, he could have covered it with bandages to limit being driven by his visions. Remember why Gojo had to wear blindfolds to prevent draining his energy? It could be a twisted version of this case with Loki.

Loki’s mother was obsessed with astrological beliefs and prophecies. Could her son see those prophecies coming true? Or since his own mother despised his demonic appearance, especially his eyes, Loki could have hidden that with bandages similar to how Charlotte Pudding hid her third eye with bangs when her mother, Big Mom, considered her child creepy.

The Power Hidden Within Loki’s Eyes

Interestingly, fans also pointed out that Madam Shyarly from Fishman Island, who is well-known for her authentic prophecies, also has eyes very similar to Loki when she sees into the future. This was speculated first by Mr. Morj, one of the popular One Piece theorists, who claimed that Loki has the power to see the future. We highly recommend you check out his work to get a better understanding of Loki’s characterization in the series so far.

Another famous One Piece content creator, Artur, known for his works in the One Piece community, added his take on Loki’s serpent-like eyes. He highlighted the subtle details about Loki and the serpent sharing a common pattern that we might’ve overlooked in the Harley Mural. So, Loki’s design choices now hint at his devil fruit being based on a serpent.

If we are looking for a revered serpent in Norse mythology, it has to be Jörmungandr, the World Serpent. So there is a chance that Loki has a Mythical Zoan devil fruit based on the great serpent.

Oda hasn’t disclosed the reason behind Loki covering his eyes yet. We will be updating this post as more new details are unveiled in the upcoming One Piece manga chapters. That said, what do you think about Loki’s eyes in One Piece? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
