The meaning of the initial D. in the names of the legends, such as Gol D. Roger, Monkey D. Luffy, and many more, has always remained a long-standing mystery. Over the years, many fans and theorists came up with different interpretations, but we have always been waiting for an answer from Oda sensei. Now, Oda has finally given us a major clue to solving the mystery of Will of D in One Piece chapter 1164, and it has to do with the unexpected connection between Joy Boy and Davy Jones.
Spoilers Warning: This article contains spoilers about the Will of D. Proceed with caution.
Joy Boy and Davy Jones Are Confirmed to be Not the Same Person in One Piece

Joy Boy has been one of the recurring names in One Piece lately. Fans believed it was just a title at first, but the revelations in the Egghead arc confirmed that Joy Boy was a real character who existed during the Void Century. Following this incident, Oda brought back an unexpected figure whom we have already learned about all the way back in the Long Ring Long Island arc. It is none other than Davy Jones, who was the person cursed to live under the sea by the devil, according to legend.
Now, many fans began to believe that Joy Boy and Davy Jones are indeed he same person and waited to see this reveal in the story. However, Oda has just confirmed that Joy Boy and Davy D. Jones are two different legends in One Piece chapter 1164. Davy Jones is also revealed to be the former king of the Great Kingdom before Imu overthrew him and erased the place from the annals of history.
After revealing a major piece of information about Davy, Rocks asked Imu whether they are more afraid of Joy Boy or Davy Jones. This line instantly gave away that they are two different beings. Still, the most important thing is that these two legends must have rebelled against Imu and their allied forces, either together or individually. That must be the reason why Imu is so afraid of them, even in modern times, as someone will inherit “Davy’s will”, as Rocks claimed.
Joy Boy and Davy Jones Are Linked to the Will of D
Inheriting a character’s will and carrying the torch has always been one of the most recurring themes in One Piece. We always focused on the bright side, i.e., Luffy, Gol D. Roger, being the inheritors of Joy Boy’s will. But there is another side to Will of D, which has been revealed now. It’s the will of Davy Jones, which has been inherited by Rocks first and now by his son, Blackbeard.
In the latest chapter, Rocks asked Imu if they were afraid that someone would inherit Davy’s will and fulfill their promise. Undoubtedly, it is Blackbeard who has inherited the will of his clan’s founder. Now, many people have begun calling the initial D stands for Davy, but I don’t think so.
Think of the Will of D as a coin. The inheritors of Joy Boy and Davy’s will are like two sides of the same coin. While their end goal may have been to overthrow Imu, however, their approach and ideals vastly differ, as we have seen in the story. In the current day, Luffy and Blackbeard are the best examples of that. Luffy paves his path to freedom or the dawn of the world. On the other hand, Blackbeard is all about destruction.
So, we are slowly nearing the complete revelation of Will of D in the story. In the meantime, do you think the initial D refers to Davy or something else? Let us know in the comments below.
