Is Minecraft Dungeons 2 Open World?

In Short
  • Minecraft Dungeons 2 features an interconnected open world instead of the isolated mission structure in its prequel.
  • Players can explore various regions containing villages, side quests, dungeons, caves, and other points of interest.
  • The game includes a minecart fast-travel feature and keeps its action RPG nature intact rather than being a sandbox like vanilla Minecraft.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 is bringing several major changes to the dungeon-crawling formula established by its predecessor. While the original game took players through separate missions selected from a central camp, the sequel promises more connected adventures with new locations, settlements, and dangerous encounters. If you’re curious about how exploration works and whether Minecraft Dungeons 2 is an open-world game, here’s everything we know.

Is Minecraft Dungeons 2 an Open World Game?

Minecraft Dungeons 2 features an interconnected open-world design; however, it’s not an open-world survival sandbox experience like vanilla Minecraft. The most distinguishing part of this sequel from the original Minecraft Dungeons is that there is no mission-selection structure.

In Minecraft Dungeons 2, you can travel between different regions, discover settlements, complete quests, and also explore unique points of interest. The points of interest can include narrative events, side quests, structures, fast-travel hubs, caves, forgotten ruins, and more.

The available Minecraft Dungeons 2 gameplay demo shown during Xbox Gamescom and by other creators indicates that you can travel seamlessly across the connected regions. The Overworld is a fixed environment instead of being a collection of mission maps.

However, this doesn’t mean that the game offers full unrestricted access to anything and everything as you would get in vanilla Minecraft. Of course, you don’t have access to break blocks and make structures since Minecraft Dungeons 2 remains an action-RPG game centered around combat, loot, quests, and co-op play.

Among the several locations revealed so far, there are two main dimensions: the Overworld and The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2. Some of the locations shown in the Overworld include Brave Haven, Honeycomb Fields, Howling Woods, and Frozen Highlands. Brave Haven is the central hub where you start your journey and prepare for later adventures.

Since the open world of Minecraft Dungeons 2 is a huge place, you can find several fast-travel hubs at important checkpoints in the above-mentioned regions. During the Gamescom showcase, the developers were seen using this minecart fast-travel system to reach a boss fight area from Brave Haven.

To conclude, Minecraft Dungeons 2 is not a traditional sandbox-style open world like Minecraft. It is fundamentally an action RPG focused on battling hordes of enemies in Minecraft Dungeons 2, collecting unique gear, and exploring the connected regions through the Overworld and the Sift.

If you’re expecting unlimited building freedom, this isn’t that kind of experience. Of course, you have exploration options. But the scope of combat is far more extensive, with a plethora of weapons in Minecraft Dungeons 2 and tons of buildcrafting opportunities using gear, armor, and other items.
