Note: updated post on March 6, 2024, to include details about the new Minecraft game drops.
From the past year’s Minecraft Live event 2024, Mojang Studios has officially scrapped the yearly game update cycle. New game updates will now arrive as smaller game drops, and we have information about the upcoming Minecraft game drops instead of a massive Minecraft 1.22 update. The next drop doesn’t yet have a name, but if you’re curious to know what these drops will include and when they will be released, keep reading.
Minecraft 1.22 Release Date
As you’re now aware, Mojang has retired mob vote and confirmed that Minecraft updates will take a different route and will be released more frequently in smaller batches. Because of this change, we are not getting the Minecraft 1.22 update this time.
Instead, a new Minecraft drop is going to arrive very soon, and we might get an exact release date during Minecraft Live 2025, which will be held on March 22, 2025. However, since the features in this drop have been in testing for a long while and are almost ready for rollout, we speculate it will arrive sometime around the end of March or April 2025. If you wish to know more about the next Minecraft update release date, read our linked guide for all the information you could need.
Minecraft 1.22 Update Name
Continuing the same point as above, since Mojang has moved away from extensive content updates and Mob Votes, Minecraft 1.22 update won’t be a reality. Hence, it will not have an official name.
The smaller game drops officially introduced at Minecraft Live 2025 will carry forward the naming tradition with cool and funky names pointing to the features they bring. Although the next game drop does not have a name yet, I believe it should be called the Pasteur and Pens update.

Since we all desire an End update, check out things Mojang should add in Minecraft 1.22 for even more ideas and speculations. These are just some of the features I wish to see in the future End update if it ever comes to fruition.
New Mobs Variants in Minecraft 1.22
There is no Minecraft 1.22 update this time around, and we have information on next upcoming game drop. In the next drop we will have two new variants each for Chickens, Cows, and Pigs.
The two new variations, a warm and a cold one, are found in their respective climates. The regular versions of these animals will now be known as temperate mobs and can spawn mostly in forests, plains, and swamps.

Next, we have new rules set for the Sheep wool color. The warmer Minecraft biomes, like Savanna and Jungles, will now have Brown sheep as the most common, while the colder biomes, like Taiga and Windswept Hills, will now have Black Sheep as the most common spawn. White sheep will now be more common in all other temperate regions.
Moreover, another cool introduction is the sound variants for the Wolves. Once they spawn in your world, each wolf species will have a random sound. This will give them a unique personality, as they can pant, growl, bark, whine, or feel hurt.
New Flowers in Minecraft 1.22
Now, based upon all the previous Snapshots and experimental features, we will have a revamped Desert biome after introducing the pink Cactus flowers, as shown in the image below. Moreover, we’ll have new desert ambient sounds that can be heard while traversing this barren land.

In addition to Cactus flowers, we now have Wildflowers that can be placed on a flat surface, with a mechanic similar to Cherry petals. Moreover, we have falling leaf animations and leaf litter in the game. Here, the latter spawns and can be placed on the ground, just like the Wildflowers and Cherry Petals.
New Features in Minecraft 1.22
As we have mentioned time and time again, there is no Minecraft 1.22. However, we have created a dedicated guide on all confirmed features in the next Minecraft update here. Check out a recap of the new features in the next game drop:
- Farm animals like Chickens, Cows, and Pigs have two new variants, whereas Sheep have new rules for their wool color. Wolves will now have a random sound at spawn.
- Two new flowers—the Cactus flower and Wildflowers will be introduced, along with a new Firefly bush, enhancing the ambience of river banks at night.
- We have falling leaf animation under various kinds of trees, along with Leaf Litter blocks, more commonly found in dark forest biomes.
- The Desert will have a new form of dry grass and ambient sounds.
- Finally, we have trade rebalances for the Wandering Trader and the Village Cartographer, offering new items at great deals.
