In Short
  • NetEase Games has completely overhauled the team-up system in Marvel Rivals Season 9.
  • Players can now choose between two team-up abilities for every hero in the spawn room.
  • All team-up abilities can now be used regardless of whether the required partner is on the team.

Not even in their wildest dreams did players expect the Marvel Rivals team-up system to be completely reworked. NetEase Games has pulled off the impossible by revamping every single team-up in the game. The new system makes it feel like players are experiencing a sequel to Marvel Rivals, with every aspect of the team-up abilities being rewritten. So, check out how the new team-ups work in Marvel Rivals Season 9 here.

How Do Team-Ups Work in Marvel Rivals?

Starting Marvel Rivals Season 9, heroes don’t have to be paired up together for the team-ups to work. Instead, every hero in the roster is getting two new team-up abilities in the game. However, the main catch is that players can select one team-up ability at a time. Additionally, players can swap between the two team-ups in the spawn room even during mid-match.

The biggest change to the new team-up system is that heroes can now freely use their respective team-up on the battlefield even if their required partner isn’t on the team. Devs have now removed the whole anchor mechanic in the team-up system. In addition, every team-up ability also gets a base effect and an enhanced effect. If that sounds confusing, let me explain.

For example, if you are playing The Punisher and want to use the Ammo Overload team-up ability, you no longer require a Rocket Raccoon on your team. That’s the base effect of Ammo Overload. However, if someone plays Rocket Raccoon on your team, the team-up’s enhanced effect is automatically applied. In this case, The Punisher can deal more damage than usual with Rocket on his side.

Although it is now entirely optional to have the required partner on the team, make sure your friend picks one, as the enhanced effect does wonders in the new season. Some of the enhanced team-ups are overpowered in the game at the moment.

How to Use a Team-Up Ability in Marvel Rivals Season 9

In Marvel Rivals Season 9, players can pre-select the preferred team-up ability for their character in the hero menu before queuing a match. However, if you feel like you need to switch your current team-up ability, then head to the nearest spawn room and swap the team-up mid-game.

  • Preselecting the team ups in Marvel Rivals
  • Selecting the hero team up before match begins in Marvel Rivals

Once you have equipped the right team-up for your hero, all you have to do is press the respective key to activate the team-up ability on the battlefield. The most common keys to activate all the new team-up abilities in the game are C and X. For example, if you are playing the new hero Jubilee, all you have to do is press C to activate the selected team-up ability. In my case, I opted for the Vampiric Kin team-up, and it can be activated like any other ability in the game, as you can see below:

Now, there are also passive team-up abilities which do not require any activation. Take the new Black Widow for example. If you pick either the Burning Bullets or Allied Agents team-up, the team-up is automatically activated as you set your foot on the battlefield.

Previously, the devs rotated Marvel Rivals team-up abilities every season, adding new ones while temporarily removing others. Now, Zhiyong, the game’s lead combat designer, has confirmed that team-up abilities no longer rotate. Instead, the devs will make balance adjustments to team-ups every season; each ability will receive buffs or nerfs as needed going forward.

All new future heroes joining the Marvel Rivals roster will come ready with two new team-up loadouts. For instance, The Hood is next in line to debut in Marvel Rivals Season 9.5. On the mid-season update launch day, The Hood will arrive with two new team-up abilities. One of his team-ups with Jubilee has already been revealed in the game now.

Therefore, Marvel Rivals team-up abilities will be expanding, with new ones added every season. With two new abilities for every hero, there are now over 100 different team-up abilities in Marvel Rivals. So, players now have plenty of team-up options to choose from. Now you can understand how NetEase Games has rebuilt the new team-up system from the ground up.
