As the episode opens, something truly unusual happens as Emilia points out all the Nazi stuff that is going on in this universe, but it looks as if Peacemaker didn’t even notice any of it. Now, one might think that it’s simply because he’s careless, but according to James Gunn, Peacemaker does not notice the Nazi symbols in Episode 7 because of a deeper reason. So let’s talk about it.
Why Didn’t Peacemaker Notice the Nazi Symbolism?
After every episode of Peacemaker, the cast and James Gunn appear on a podcast titled Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn. In the podcast, they all discuss various aspects of the show as well as the specific episode, BTS stories, etc. In the podcast, followed by Episode 7, James Gunn revealed that Peacemaker did not notice the Nazi symbols and elements because of his upbringing.
We all know that the Auggie who raised the main continuity Peacemaker was a white supremacist and also a Nazi. So, even though he is not a racist, growing up in that environment made Peacemaker insensitive to things like the absence of people of color. While explaining this, Gunn said-
“He is not a racist, but he was raised in a certain way and he dosen’t notice that there aren’t any people of color, anywhere!”
This little detail adds a lot of volume to the message being sent by the show. Adding this detail tells us that even if we don’t go down the same wrong paths our parents did, the upbringing we get can have unwanted effects on us in the long run.
