Instagram has announced a new feature to expand the capabilities of its stories feature. The new feature is called “Type mode,” and as the name suggests, it lets you post stories with just text, with no need to snap a picture or record a video.

In order to use this new feature, you can swipe along at the bottom of the screen when you’re in Instagram stories’ viewfinder and select “Type,” which will show up as an option along with Normal, Live, etc. Type sits all the way to the left. Once you’ve selected the option, all you have to do is start typing.

You can also play around with different background colors, text styles, etc. Much like the regular photos and video stories, Type stories will also disappear in 24 hours unless you decide to highlight it in your account.

Although it is just an incremental update to stories, it is expected to be quite handy. If you’re an avid Instagram stories user, then you must have seen a lot of people sharing stories with just texts. It shows how the company is paying attention to the way people are using the stories feature.

Today, we’re introducing “Type” mode in stories, a new way to share anything that’s on your mind with creative text styles and backgrounds — no photo or video required. Now, you can turn your most random thoughts into something colorful and expressive. – Instagram

Lastly, it is also worth noting that the new text styles can also be used on your photo and video stories. With that being said, the “Type” mode has already started rolling out for all users, and if you’ve updated your application, you should already have it by now.
