Huawei P20 Launch on March 27: What to Expect From the Upcoming Flagship Series

Huawei P20

It is not just Xiaomi who’s unveiling its flagship device, the Mi Mix 2S, on March 27th. Its Chinese counterpart Huawei is also taking the stage in Paris on the same day to take the wraps off its flagship Huawei P20 series.

This has also been one of the most hyped and talked about devices (yes, there’ll be three different variants) in the past few weeks, thanks to the myriad of leaks and teasers that have given away most of the upcoming features. The most striking being the presence of the infamous notch on the front and a triple camera setup on the rear. So, let us jump in and take a look at what the P20 lineup beholds for us.

Huawei P20

Without a doubt, the first thing that you notice about the Huawei P20 will obviously be the notch. Yes, the Chinese giant has embraced the notch trend and condensed it to sport just the earpiece, selfie camera, and all necessary sensors. It’ll be interesting to see what light Huawei paints the notch in, especially when Asus went all out with mocking the iPhone X.

The leaks suggest that Huawei P20 will feature a 5.8-inch Full HD+ LCD screen, with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The ratio might seem odd at first but has been extended to include the notch, while providing the users an option to make it visible or hide it using a software trick.

It’ll be powered by the latest HiSilicon Kirin 970 processor, coupled with 2 RAM+ storage configurations i.e 4GB/ 6GB and 128GB respectively. The fingerprint reader has been housed on the rear, which is the optimal position for the same.

Coming to the optics, a fresh leak from a German retailer has confirmed the same just a day ahead of the launch. The Huawei P20 will come with a 20MP primary RGB sensor and 12MP secondary monochrome sensor in tow, making the device competent of capturing depth info and immense detail even in low-light conditions. The front camera will be a 16MP shooter, which is more than enough to capture beautiful selfies.

Huawei P20 Pro

Jumping to the most significant device of the bunch, the Huawei P20 Pro will take the crown for being the first smartphone to include a triple camera system. In tandem with all the rumors, the leaked retail listing of the device confirms that it’ll feature a combo 40MP, 20MP and 8MP sensors on the rear.

The retailer suggests that the 40MP sensor will be the primary one and will be paired with the 8MP telephoto lens. This will enable the hybrid zoom functionality on the device, which will off 3x optical zoom, 5x magnification. The third 20MP sensor is expected to be monochrome so that it can capture depth data and add more detail to your photos. However, that’s just what we know from rumours, and the official confirmation will come tomorrow evening.

Most of the internal specifications will remain the same as the P20, so there’s not much to discuss there. The Huawei P20 Pro will feature a bigger 6.1-inch Full HD display, with the same 19:9 aspect ratio and 4,000 mAh battery as compared to the smaller 3,340 mAh juice in its younger brethren. The fingerprint, however, has been moved to the bottom chin on the front and I’m not the biggest fan of this configuration.

Huawei P20 Lite

While the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro will be the center of attention at the event, there’ll also be a third mid-range variant of the device to make its official debut at the event. Called the Huawei P20 Lite, this smartphone has made a flashy debut online and we know a lot about it already.

The Huawei P20 Lite features a 5.84-inch Full HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) display, with a 19:9 aspect ratio to embrace the notch. Since it is the lower-end variant of the P20 lineup, it is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 659 chipset along with 4GB RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage.

As for the optics, the leaks highlighted the presence of an iPhone X-like vertical dual camera setup on the rear, with a 16MP primary and 2MP secondary sensor. The leak didn’t have any other info, except for the 3000 mAh battery size, on this device.

Huawei has not just refined the design and features of its devices with the P20 lineup, but is also looking forward to provide a wide variety of color choices to the users as well.

All of the devices in the P20 series will be powered by Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box but will be layered with EMUI 8.1 on top. You’ll also get the trendy Face Unlock feature on all of these devices to attract users in each price segment. They’ll also feature NFC support, making them capable of being used for contactless payments.

Price And Availability

According to the recent leaks, the European pricing for the devices in the lineup has been confirmed. The 4GB RAM and 128 GB storage variant of the Huawei P20 will retail at 699 euros (approx ₹56,000), whereas you’ll have to shell out 899 euros (₹72,000) for the 6GB + 128GB Huawei P20 Pro variant. The Huawei P20 Lite, on the other hand, will most likely be priced around 349 euros (₹29,000).

There is currently no word on when the Huawei P20 lineup will go on sale, but we’ll get all the nitty-gritties at the launch event tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates. What do you think the triple camera setup will be used for? Tell us in the comments below.
