- AMBER alerts are used by law enforcement agencies to find missing people, especially children, in many countries.
- But if you find them disruptive, Android lets you turn off these alerts easily.
- You can disable AMBER alerts by heading over to Settings > Wireless emergency alerts, and turning off the AMBER alerts toggle.
Regardless of the type of device you own, you may have seen an option in the Settings app called AMBER Alerts. The abbreviation stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, and has a really important use case. However, if you don’t want to see AMBER alerts because you find them disruptive, and want to turn them off on your Android phone, it’s extremely easy to do so. Here’s how to turn off AMBER alerts on Android.
What Are AMBER Alerts?
AMBER stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response and is used to send users alerts about missing people, especially children. It increases the chances of finding the missing person. Its goal is to stimulate communities to aid in search of a missing person and recover them safely.
These alerts are transmitted through smartphones, TV, radio, and other communication devices. When law enforcement agencies issue an Amber alert, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) is notified in priority and the latter then broadcast the notification to secondary distributors.
The alert’s name was created in reference to Amber Hagerman, a nine-year-old girl who got abducted and murdered in 1996. Although the abbreviation has “America” in it, AMBER alerts are in use across other countries including the UK, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, France, Netherlands, Malaysia, and China.
