How to Tame a Cat in Minecraft

In Short
  • Cats can be found spawning naturally in villages or at witch huts in Minecraft.
  • Taming the cats only requires players to feed them either raw cod or raw salmon.
  • When players sleep beside cats, they can climb on top of them and give out gifts when the day arrives.

As a Minecraft player, you can either be a cat person or a dog person. If you are in the former bunch, this guide is for you. Cats are not only cute but also help keep the Creepers away, get easy loot, and add life to your Minecraft house. That’s why we are here to teach you how to tame a cat in Minecraft.

But that’s not all. We will also go over the steps to find your feline partner, what to feed the cat, and even how to make it spawn in Minecraft. Our guide works on both Java and Bedrock editions, and it is compatible with every new Minecraft drop.

Cats are one of the many passive mobs in Minecraft that interact with the player. There are plenty of mechanics around them in the game. So, we have divided our guide into several sections to help you better understand cats in Minecraft.

Where to Find Cats in Minecraft

Within Minecraft, a cat usually spawns after every real-world minute. But that’s only if the location is close to a village and has fewer than five cats. For the location, Minecraft refers to the closest two chunks around the player. Generally, you can find a cat in these locations:

  • Villages
  • Swamp Huts

Villages

You can find cats in Minecraft villages if they have at least five beds in them. The number of beds required is four in the Bedrock edition. These beds must be claimed, i.e., a villager must have slept on them during the last night. Each of the village cats can be of any random color, 25% of such cats can be kittens or baby cats.

Witch Swamp Huts

Every swamp hut in Minecraft spawns with at least one cat. This cat is always black in color, and you can also make more such cats spawn in the hut by placing a grass block around it. However, on the Java edition, such spawning doesn’t happen when there’s already a cat within 16 blocks of the hut.

Black Cat in Minecraft

There are 11 types of cats in Minecraft, namely tabby, tuxedo, red, siamese, British shorthair, calico, Persian, Jellie, ragdoll, white, and black. Among the 11 cat breeds or skins in Minecraft, the siamese is the rarest cat in the game.

Now, out of these, you can manually arrange the situation to make a black cat spawn. Black cats can spawn under two conditions:

  • If the spawn area is inside or around 16 blocks horizontal radius of a swamp hut, every spawned cat in that area will be black.
  • When a cat spawns during a full moon night, there’s a 50% chance of it being black.

How to Tame a Cat in Minecraft

Taming a cat in Minecraft is similar to taming a wolf. You just have to keep giving it food until a collar appears around its neck. So, follow these steps, and the cat will be yours in no time:

  • First, catch a few fishes since Minecraft cats love raw salmon and raw cod. You can use a fishing rod or jump into the river to manually find and collect food for the cat.
  • Next, you need to slowly approach a stray or untamed cat. You can’t re-tame a cat that’s already tamed by another player.
  • Finally, to tame a cat in Minecraft, you need to feed it raw salmon or raw cod by right-clicking or using the secondary action key on it.
  • The process might take you 1-10 fishes, but you have to keep feeding the cat until hearts appear on top of its head. Then the cat will start following you around, and you will have successfully tamed it.

What Does a Tamed Cat Do

As mentioned earlier, the cat will have a collar around its neck once it’s tamed. You can then make the cat sit using your secondary action key on it. It will remain in that position until you allow it to move. If your cat isn’t in the sitting position, it will randomly explore the area around you. It can climb on top of chests, beds, and even active furnaces.

Do keep in mind that, unlike wolves aka dogs in Minecraft, cats can’t attack other hostile mobs. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to protect them. All cats in Minecraft are immune to fall damage. Moreover, the Creeper and the Phantom are afraid of cats. So, at times, the cat can even act as your bodyguard.

Gifts for Players

A surprisingly little-known feature of cats in Minecraft is their ability to give gifts to the player. If a player sleeps close to a tamed cat, then the cat might gift it a dropped item on waking up. But this doesn’t work if the cat is ordered to sit or if the player is sleeping during a thunderstorm in the daytime. The cat’s gift to you can be one of the following items:

  • Rabbit’s foot
  • Rabbit hide
  • String
  • Rotten Flesh
  • Feather
  • Raw Chicken
  • Phantom Membrane

The chances of receiving a gift from the cat, as per Minecraft Wiki, are close to 70%. But out of the giftable items, the phantom membrane has the lowest chances of spawning.

Now that you know how to tame a stray cat in Minecraft, it’s time to make a house for both of you to stay in. You can use these best Minecraft house ideas for inspiration. Having said that, which is your favorite pet in Minecraft? Let us know in the comments section below.
