How to Restart an iPad (All Models)

In Short
  • To restart an iPad without a Home button, press and hold the Power button and either of the volume buttons simultaneously.
  • To restart an iPad with a Home button, press and hold the Power button until the "Slide to Power Off" slider appears.
  • If your iPad is unresponsive and the touch is not working, force restart the device in a few simple steps.

Is your iPad behaving weirdly? Are you experiencing random lags and stutters, or crashing apps on your iPad? While this kind of thing doesn’t usually happen, there are times when your device might not be performing at its best, and as the old adage goes — “did you try turning it off and turning it on again?” — a restart usually fixes most common tech problems. So, if you’re wondering, here is how to restart an iPad.

The Simplest Method to Restart an iPad

Whether you have an iPad Pro, a new iPad Air, iPad mini, or even the regular iPad without a home button, here’s how to restart it.

  • Press and hold the power button, and either volume button (volume up OR volume down) simultaneously.

  • You will see a slider that says “Slide to Power Off” on the screen. Simply drag the slider to the right to turn off your iPad.
  • Once your iPad is off (it can take a few seconds), press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen and that’s it.

Note: You might be thinking that this method is similar to restarting an iPhone with Face ID, and you’d be quite right. It’s exactly the same

Restart an iPad with the Home Button

If you have an older iPad, or an older iPad mini or iPad Air, chances are that your tablet has a home button along the bottom edge. The method for rebooting these iPads is slightly different from what I have mentioned above. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Press and hold the power button on your iPad.
  • Once the “Slide to Power Off” slider shows up, just drag it to the right to turn your iPad off.
  • Wait for a few seconds; then press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Force Restart an iPad if it’s Frozen

If your iPad is not responding, and you’re unable to shut it down at all, you can do a hard reset to solve the problem. Here’s how to do that.

  • Press and release the volume up button
  • Press and release the volume down button
  • Press and hold the power button
  • Once the Apple logo appears on the screen, release the power button

Note: This method works for all the new iPads including the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and the regular iPad 10th gen.

Force Restart an Older iPad with Home Button

If you have an older iPad that has a home button, the method to force restart it is slightly different. Just follow the steps below to hard reset your iPad:

  • Press and hold the power button and the home button simultaneously.
  • Once the Apple logo shows up, release both buttons.

That’s it! Your iPad will now force restart and any issues you were facing should have resolved by now.

Will force restarting my iPad delete my data?
