What is smooth stone?

Smooth stone is a nice and clean building block. It’s lighter in color than the regular stone block and also includes a fairly distinctive border on the edges. To obtain it, you can smelt stone in a Minecraft furnace and that’s the most reliable way. Its primary use is in building, providing only smooth stone slabs as a variant.

Items You Need to Make Smooth Stone

In order to make smooth stone in Minecraft, you will need the following resources:

  • Stone Block
  • Furnace
  • Fuel (of your choice)

Stone is a block naturally generated beneath the surface, but it can also make up the surface of some Minecraft biomes. It is an abundant resource, so you can locate it easily. The best way to acquire stone is by the silk touch Minecraft enchantment. If you are using a pickaxe with it, you will be able to break stone blocks and get it instantly in item form. However, if you don’t have this enchantment for use on the crafting table or as an enchanted book, you can smelt cobblestone in a furnace to get stone.

The furnace is one of the basic utility blocks in the game that only requires 8 cobblestone blocks to craft. We have already prepared a detailed guide to make and use a furnace in Minecraft, so you don’t need to waste any time.

Moreover, to use a furnace you will need fuel. It can be any wooden block or item, as well as flammable items, such as coal, charcoal, or a lava bucket. Though, we also mentioned everything you need to know about fuels in the furnace article linked above.

Best Uses of Smooth Stone in Minecraft

Now that you have obtained smooth stone, let’s see what uses this block has in the game:

1. Building Block

The primary use of a smooth stone block and its slab variant is as a building block. It’s a pretty block that’s pleasant to look at. Its light and bright gray texture makes it a good option for any floor design. Furthermore, since you make it in a furnace, it can be a good addition in the super smelter or a forge room. Due to its highly polished appearance, it can even be used as a decoration piece that’s meant to represent a thoroughly processed material.

2. Crafting Ingredient

Full smooth stone block appears in two crafting recipes. One of them is for the blast furnace. It’s a furnace variant that smelts ores and metals twice as quickly as a regular furnace. The catch, however, is that it can only smelt those items and nothing else. If you would like to learn more about how to make blast furnace in Minecraft, check out our linked guide.

3. Stonecutter Ingredient

If you’re going the crafting table route, you will need at least 3 smooth stone blocks to craft at least a single smooth stone slab. However, the stonecutter route is so much more efficient, as the ratio of the smooth stone blocks and smooth stone slabs is 1:2. This means a single block of smooth stone is enough to craft its slab variant.

So, whenever you’re working with different types of stone blocks, always use a stonecutter.
