How to Make a Poll on Discord

In Short
  • Discord does not have a built-in poll feature, but there are four alternative methods to create polls on Discord servers.
  • These methods include using emoji reactions, creating a custom channel, using an external website, and adding a bot to create polls.
  • The best method for you will depend on your server's needs and preferences.

Discord has a ton of features for its large and varied kinds of communities, but none of them are as useful as polls. Yes, Discord polls are really helpful in getting feedback as well as decision-making in communities with hundreds or even thousands of members. In this article, I will show you how to make a poll on Discord, which is crucial if you want to have a thriving community on the app.

How to Do a Poll on Discord?

Creating a Discord poll is actually pretty simple, especially since the app added a built-in poll option. With that, anyone can do a Discord poll now. However, the steps to make a Discord poll slightly vary from the web and desktop versions to the Discord mobile app.

Method 1: Create a Discord Poll on Desktop and Web

To do a poll on Discord’s desktop and web version, just go to server and follow these steps:

  1. Click on the + icon in the bottom left corner.
Click the plus icon in the Discord text box
  1. Here, select the Create Poll option.
  1. Now write down the question for your Discord poll.
  2. Then add poll options to pick from. (By default, users can vote on one option, but you can check the box for Allow Multiple Answers to let them select other options in the poll.)
  1. You can also add a duration for the poll, which goes from 1 hour to 2 weeks.
  2. Finally, tap the Post button to share the poll in your server.

Once the Discord poll is live, server members can select any one of the options and click on the Vote button to confirm their selection.

Method 2: Create a Discord Poll on Android and iOS

The steps to create a poll on the Discord app on Android and iOS are actually pretty similar to the web counterpart. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open the Discord app and navigate to the server channel to create a poll.
  2. Tap on the + icon in the left corner and tap on Polls.
  3. Now, enter the poll question along with relevant options for it.
  1. Like the desktop version, you can allow multiple answers.
  2. You can also set a Duration by tapping on the option and selecting a Poll duration.
  3. Once you are done, tap on the Post option in the top right corner.

After the set duration is complete, you can no longer vote in the poll. Depending on the channel rules, other members might not be allowed to make polls besides moderators and server owners.

Other Ways to Make Discord Polls

The option to make polls on Discord is actually quite recent. Before that, people used all sorts of creative workarounds to host polls for their communities on the platform. Some of them still work, and you can use them if the native version doesn’t work out for you.

Method 1: Create a Poll Using Reactions

Long-time Discord users know that they can react to any message or post with an emoji. This emoji reaction feature was often used as a method to do a basic poll on the server. If you still don’t quite get the idea, then take a look at the steps below.

  1. To create an emoji reaction poll, type your question in the text box.
  2. Then write instructions to answer with which emoji to cast the vote. (Like if you want to create a Yes/no poll, you can ask members to react with Thumbs up for yes, and thumbs down for no.)

Note: You must tag @everyone to notify about your poll to all the members of the server. If you want to include certain individuals, then tag them along with your poll.

One major issue with this method is that your poll may get drowned in the barrage of messages, making it hard for other members to find the poll itself. That’s why it would be better to create a separate channel for polls if you are the server owner. Make sure to go to Advanced permissions and allow toggles for Read Messages and Add Reactions so it doesn’t get spammed by messages.

Method 2: Add a Bot to Create Polls on Discord

There are a lot of useful Discord Bots that can automate moderation on servers, like greeting new members, moderating, warning, or banning users. But we can also use them to make polls on Discord as well. In this guide, I will show you how to make a Discord poll with the Carl bot, but you can use any other option that you already use or are familiar with.

Adding Carl Bot to the Discord Server

Before you create a poll with a bot, you need to add it to your server first. Here’s how you can do it.

  1. To add Carl Bot, go to Carl.gg and click on Log in with Discord.
  2. Sign up with your Discord account, then move on to the next step.
  1. Select the server where you want to add the bot.
  2. Next, click on Continue and pick the permissions you want to allow the bot.
  1. Finally, click on Authorize to complete the process.

Creating a Poll Using a Carl Bot

Now that the Carl bot has been added to my Discord server, let’s start creating a poll with it.

  1. To create a simple poll, type “/poll“, then space and enter your poll question. See the image below as an example.
  1. Next, press the Tab and pick choices. Then type the choices for the poll.
  1. To add more choices, type a “,” between them. (For example, to add “Cat and dog as two choices, you can type, “cat, dog”.)
  1. At last, press Enter to send the poll in the channel.

Method 3: Use an External Website to Create Discord Polls

If the above options sound like a hassle, you can also use an external website to make a quick poll. The benefit of using this option is that it preserves the anonymity of the users who have voted. For this article, I am using the Poll-Maker website since it does not require a sign-in.

  1. Open your browser and visit the Poll-Maker website.
  2. Write down the poll question and fill in the choices in their respective boxes.
  1. Then, click on Create Poll and click on Copy to copy its link.
  1. Paste the copied link into your server.
  2. Make sure to add @everyone along with the link to alert all the members on the server.
  1. Now, just visit the link and you can view the results of the poll.

That’s pretty much all there is to creating Discord Polls. As a community-driven app, it is not surprising to see how often polls are used on Discord. Whether you are using the built-in method or the other workarounds, I hope you found a favorable solution. But if you do need more help, let us know in the comments below.

There is no strict method to only allow members to react with certain emojis. But you can ask the members to only react with the emojis mentioned in the poll.

No. All you need is to add the bot to your Discord server for it to work. Make sure to provide it necessary permissions or certain functions won’t work properly.

Hosting a poll on an alternate website would be the best way for members to cast an anonymous vote. Because the person hosting the poll can view which member reacted with what on Discord.
