- A former Rockstar Games animator has claimed that GTA 6 might run at 30 FPS on consoles at launch.
- Mike York's thoughts were aired in a now deleted Kiwi Talkz podcast episode.
- Rockstar has not publicly acknowledged this incident, and as such, it remains to be seen.
Just when we thought the GTA 6 rumor mill was settling down, we have another exciting but sad detail to discuss. Amidst all the graphical advancements the next Grand Theft Auto title is receiving, it now seems the game might run a bit slower than usual. According to a former Rockstar Games developer, GTA 6 may only run at 30 FPS on consoles at launch.
The information comes from Mike York, a Rockstar employee who used to work as an animator in the company. York has previously worked on the company’s most successful titles, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5. Speaking on an episode of a now-removed Kiwi Talkz podcast, Mike said that he’s not confident about Rockstar’s ability to run GTA 6 on 30 FPS.
“I don’t know if they’ll be able to pull off 60 FPS,” said Mike when asked about the upcoming game. Instead, the former Rockstar animator believes that GTA 6 will be locked at 30 FPS on consoles. There could be many reasons for this, but the most common one is, of course, to ensure the game runs at a stable frame rate.
“But from my experience, they’re going to squeeze every little freaking thing they can out of it and then optimize later for 60 frames because it’s not as important as just making the game amazing at 30 frames.” – Mike York
Mike went on to clarify that the FPS for GTA 6 might increase with future patches but will most likely be launched at this nerfed rate. Furthermore, he did mention that the new PS5 Pro might be able to run the game at 60 FPS but that too remains to be seen.
While York seems convinced that GTA 6 will be locked to 30 frames, we sure hope that’s not the case. The 2025 gaming industry practically demands that most games run at 60 FPS at launch with options to reduce it from the gamer’s side. However, it does make sense for the game to slow down a bit due to GTA 6’s insane graphical fidelity.
