- GTA 6 will feature a broad smell system that lets Jason and Lucia react naturally to different odors.
- Rockstar confirmed this mechanic in the new Edge Magazine interview on October 29, 2026.
- Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut says the smell system will provoke "varying degrees of disgust" in Jason and Lucia.
Rockstar has thought of just about everything to make GTA 6 an immersive and detailed open-world experience, and its newly revealed smell system is another example. The mechanic will let Jason and Lucia react naturally to the different smells they encounter across the game world.
Speaking to Edge Magazine for its November 2026 issue (via GamesRadar+), released on October 29, Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut confirmed that the smell system will provoke “varying degrees of disgust” in both Jason and Lucia at locations around the GTA 6 map.
During Garbut’s play session, he encountered an empty house with a room containing family photographs of a dog. In the next room, he found the dog, which had wrecked the entire room with no family in sight. “There was s**t in the corner, smeared around a bit,” said Garbut.

When Jason entered the house, he immediately recoiled in disgust, showing how the smell system can trigger different reactions to foul odors across GTA 6’s Leonida.
Rockstar hasn’t confirmed whether Jason and Lucia will also realistically react to pleasant smells, but the system’s broader design leaves room for that possibility, especially when they eat food to maintain their weight in GTA 6.
According to the Edge Magazine interview, Rockstar created the game’s smell system as part of a “particular piece of explorable content.” However, recent developments turned it into a full-blown mechanic that Jason and Lucia will react to in different locations, thanks to an upgraded RAGE Engine for GTA 6.
GTA 6’s realistic sweat mechanic could also tie into the smell system, with Jason or Lucia potentially reacting if the other skips a shower. Red Dead Redemption 2 featured a similar detail, as NPCs could react to Arthur’s cleanliness. But the upcoming game appears to take the idea further with a broader system that triggers reactions to different smells.
Rockstar has yet to confirm how extensive the smell system will be. Still, you can expect Jason and Lucia to react realistically to bad odor throughout locations like GTA 6’s Grassrivers or Leonida Keys.
