After lying in wait for over a decade, the anticipation for GTA 6 is sky-high! As Take-Two finally confirmed GTA 6’s release date, gamers all over started getting excited all over again. Amidst the plethora of questions by gamers, a big one many are wondering about is the GTA 6 budget. After all, a game that is more than a decade in the making has to be expensive, right? Well, we thought the same and decided to do a little digging. Keep reading to know what we found.
How Much Did GTA 6 Cost to Make?
Unfortunately, neither Take-Two Interactive nor Rockstar Games has revealed any official numbers for GTA 6’s budget. However, there are, of course, plenty of leaks and rumors out there.
The most pressing one comes from a Reddit post leak that suggests that the GTA 6’s budget could well over be $2 billion. Despite the budget being rumored to be so big, it is not that big of a shocker.
More than a decade earlier, in 2008, Grand Theft Auto 4 set a new bar with its development budget reaching a staggering $100 million. This price tag rivaled even big-budget Hollywood films at the time. GTA 4 became a runaway success, selling a whopping 25 million copies and generating nearly $2 billion in revenue—a remarkable five times its production cost!
With GTA 5, Rockstar went ahead with a much crazier budget of $265 million. As we all know from the Take-Two press release of May 2024, GTA 5 has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. The franchise, in total, has sold over 425 million copies, too. So, it is certain that Take-Two is always anticipating greater revenue for the franchise, hence such a big budget.
However, people also claim that this 2 billion dollar budget is a total allocation for the game’s lifespan. This means that money from this budget could be used for marketing and future GTA Online content for GTA 6.
Whatever the budget, GTA 6 is set to be a masterpiece. However, that also means that GTA 6’s pre-orders will cost a fortune and a half.
