- All purchased skins, cars, and Jam Track will remain in players' Fortnite locker.
- UEFN assets for Ballistic will stay in Fortnite Creative, allowing players to create FPS experiences.
- Epic Games will not issue automatic V-Bucks refunds, as they maintain their functional value.
Epic Games recently announced that Fortnite will be undergoing a significant restructuring in 2026. This not only included the unfortunate layoffs but also the sunsetting of three game modes: Ballistic, Festival Battle Stage, and Rocket Racing. This has left players concerned about their investments in the game and thinking about how the Fortnite modes shutdown will impact their in-game cosmetic locker. If you find yourself wondering the same, here’s everything you need to know.
List of All Fortnite Game Modes Closing in 2026
Epic Games has officially initiated the following Fortnite mode shutdowns in 2026:
- Ballistic: Fortnite’s 5v5 tactical shooter mode went offline on April 16, 2026, with the release of the 40.20 update.
- Festival Battle Stage: The competitive PvP element of Fortnite Festival was also removed on April 16, 2026.
- Rocket Racing: The arcade racer mode will remain active longer than others, being slated for removal in October 2026.
With such a sudden announcement, it has left players wondering about a lot of questions related to their Fortnite lockers and skins. Here is what will happen to the mode-specific cosmetics you own in Fortnite after the shutdowns.
Will I Lose My Purchased Skins and Cosmetics?
No, all of your Fortnite skins will remain safe, and your locker will remain the core of your Epic account. Epic Games has confirmed that while specific game modes might disappear, any cosmetics you purchased for them, or used within them, will not be deleted.
All skins, back blings, and pickaxes are considered platform-wide assets. Whether you bought a skin or earned it through the Fortnite Battle Pass, it will remain in your global Locker for use in other modes, even after the upcoming Fortnite mode shutdowns. You don’t need to worry about a Fortnite Locker transfer; your inventory will stay exactly where it is.
All Guitars, Keytars, Drums, and Microphones will also remain in your locker and will remain in your locker and fully playable in the remaining Festival modes. Additionally, you can continue using the Jam Track Player in Fortnite Battle Royale.
What Happens to Rocket Racing Cars and Vehicle Skins?
Since many players invested heavily in Rocket Racing cars and expensive vehicle bundles like the McLaren, there has been significant concern regarding vehicle skins. However, there is no need to worry.
Epic has clarified that all owned vehicles are part of the Fortnite car transfer system. Even after the dedicated Fortnite Rocket Racing mode shutdown, your Car Bodies will remain in your Locker. Since vehicles are cross-game assets, any car you own in Fortnite will also be available in Rocket League (and vice-versa) through the connected Epic Games account.
Are V-Bucks Safe After the 2026 Mode Shutdowns?
Yes, your V-Bucks safety is guaranteed. Fortnite V-Bucks are tied to your Epic Games account balance, and not to any individual game mode. The upcoming Fortnite mode shutdowns will not impact your Fortnite currency in 2026. You will keep your balance, and there are currently no plans for a universal V-Bucks refund because the currency remains fully spendable in the Fortnite Item Shop for Battle Royale and LEGO content.
How to Use Rocket Racing Cars in Fortnite Battle Royale
The end of the Rocket Racing mode does not mean the end of your Car Body collection in Fortnite. You can still use cars in Battle Royale and other island experiences that feature custom vehicles. Here are the steps you need to follow:
- Navigate to your Locker tab from the main Fortnite lobby.
- Through the menu on the left side, click on the Vehicle tab.
- Here, equip your preferred car body and decals.
- Save your changes.
In Battle Royale, when you enter a standard sports car on the Chapter 7 Season 2 map, it will automatically transform into the custom car body that you have equipped. This vehicle compatibility makes sure your high-end car skins have utility on the main island, even after the 2026 Fortnite mode shutdowns.
Fortnite Refund Policy for Shut Down Game Modes
If you are looking for a Fortnite refund in 2026, the standard policy still applies. Epic Games does not offer automatic refunds for sunsetting free-to-play modes. However, if you have purchased specific items recently, you might be able to use your Fortnite return tickets through the in-game Refund menu.
Is LEGO Fortnite and Battle Royale Shutting Down?
Ever since the Fortnite mode shutdowns, there has been some misinformation online, but to be clear: Battle Royale is not closing, and the LEGO Fortnite status remains active. These modes are currently the pillars of the Fortnite ecosystem. The 2026 shutdowns are targeted specifically at underperforming tertiary modes.
This will allow Epic to double down on the core Fortnite experience, meaning Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, and the Main Stage of Fortnite Festival are safe for the foreseeable future.
How to Access Discontinued Fortnite Modes in Creative (UEFN)
If you are a regular player of Rocket Racing or Ballistic and don’t want to give up on their gameplay, you can still play these experiences through Fortnite Creative modes. While Epic will be removing the UEFN Rocket Racing map template, creators can move their custom tracks and cars to standalone UEFN islands to continue using them after Rocket Racing is shut down. Here is how you can access similar modes after the mode shutdowns:
- Launch Fortnite and from the main lobby, scroll down to reach the Discover menu.
- In the Discover search bar, look for modes with key terms like FPS or Racing.
- Select your preferred map.
Additionally, Epic Games will be keeping FPS tools in Fortnite UEFN, allowing players to make similar tactical shooter experiences like Ballistic even after the shutdowns.
While the removal of these three Fortnite modes is definitely heartbreaking, hopefully, Epic will use this moment to recalibrate where the game is going in the future. Do you play any of the modes being sunset regularly? Tell us in the comments below!
