- Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 needs to bring in Percy's inner monologue.
- In the books, Percy has an inner monologue that serves a key purpose in the structure of the story, but it was removed in the first season, raising complaints from the fanbase.
- The new season adapts the novel titled Sea of Monsters, which is considered the weakest title in the franchise, so adding the monologue will help elevate the storytelling.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians has seen multiple adaptations over the years, in the form of books, movies, and TV shows. The most recent addition to this list is Disney’s adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which kicked off its first season in 2023 and is returning with season 2. However, Disney, being Disney, made a few changes to the character, and while we can get past most of it, there is one characteristic that they shouldn’t have taken away from Percy, and they need to bring it back in the upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2.
Disney Took Away One of the Defining Characteristics of Percy Jackson
If you take a look a the original Percy Jackson novels, there are instances where you might not be able to fully understand the characters from the Greek mythology featured in the story. Now, considering that the original purpose of this franchise was to educate people about the epic stories Greek myths hold, and if people are not able to grasp what is happening, it would fail in its purpose.
So, to make sure everyone understands what’s happening, Percy was given an inner monologue, which became one of the most loved and defining characteristics of Percy in the books. The monologue offered explanations, clarity, and often, comic relief in tense situations. However, in the Disney+ series, the internal monologue of Percy was removed, hence taking away one of the key factors that made the overall experience of the storytelling incomplete for people who came to watch the show after reading the books.
Even if we talk about those who have not read the source material, almost everyone would agree that the storytelling and character-building part of Percy Jackson and the Olympians felt somewhat incomplete. For instance, characters like Grover, we never really got to see real character development, or the depth of character we knew was there, but was never really brought to the forefront. If Percy had not been taken away from his inner monologue, it could have facilitated bringing more depth to various characters from his point of view.
Disney Needs to Give Percy Jackson His Inner Monologue Back in Sea of Monsters
Now, since the first season is now history, and we are moving towards a brand new season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians based on the novel Sea of Monsters, Disney really needs to reincorporate the inner monologue in the show. There are a few reasons why I say this. First of all, The Sea of Monsters is often considered the weakest book in all of the franchise. Now, of course, they could take a bit of artistic liberty and make it better, but the court of public opinion might still not rule in favour.
Giving Percy his monologue back will do two things: First, it will make the fans who have complained about this for the first season feel heard and seen, while also adding the much-needed rounded edges to the story as compared to the rough ones seen in the first season.
Other than that, since this story is considered weak, adding this element will help elevate the overall effect this season could have. So, with that being said, let’s wait and see what Disney does and hope that they give the fans what they want this time around.
