Yeah, for those unaware, both the My Hero Academia manga and anime are now over. Over its decade-long run, the author has shared only a little knowledge of Hisashi Midoriya, aka Deku’s father, since the very beginning of the My Hero Academia series.

When a doctor inquired about the quirks Deku’s parents possessed in the first MHA arc, Deku’s mother, Inko Midoriya, remarked that her husband’s quirk was the ability to breathe fire. After Hisashi’s quirk reveal, we did not learn anything more about him for a long time.

In My Hero Academia volume 11’s extras, it was revealed that Deku’s father accepted a job outside of Japan and has been abroad since then. This clearly explained why he wasn’t seen anywhere in the series. From what we have seen, it appears that Inko Midoriya solely raised Izuku Midoriya in the story.

When asked about Deku’s father at the SDCC 2018 event, MHA creator Kohei Horikoshi replied that Hisashi Midoriya would be revealed officially in the future chapters of the manga.

Seven years have passed since then, and both the anime and manga have ended in the meantime. If you are still wondering if he was revealed in the last manga chapter or episode of the MHA series, the answer is no! Unfortunately, Hisashi Midoriya never appeared in My Hero Academia.

We couldn’t find the exact reason behind this mystery. The most plausible answer is that the author Kohei Horikoshi must have sensed it would be a mistake to introduce Deku’s father at the end of the series. After everything Deku and his mother went through alone, it wouldn’t feel right to include or let his father join Izuku after he saved the world from Tomura and All For One.

There is also a high chance that his father doesn’t know much about Deku’s life, such as his son becoming a superhero and defeating the ultimate evil.

It has also been remarked that Deku’s father’s name, Hisashi, translates to “a long time ago” in Japanese and comes from the phrase “hisashiburi,” which in Japanese stands for “it’s been a long time since I saw you.” Hence, Hisashi’s name, being derived from the aforementioned phrase, is a clever wordplay and alludes to his disappearance in the series. So, did Horikoshi plan on not revealing Deku’s father from the beginning? We will never know the author’s intentions.

As Izuku’s father was never revealed in the story, this led to the fans theorizing that All For One was the real father of Deku. This theory gained massive traction back then because Horikoshi is known as a hardcore fanboy of the iconic Star Wars franchise.

And those who have watched Star Wars are well aware of how Darth Vader, aka Anakin Skywalker, was revealed to be Luke Skywalker’s father. Similar to this, fans expected Horikoshi to recreate the same story with AFO being revealed as the father of Izuku. Fans also came up with some interesting evidence that strongly supported this idea. But Kohei Horikoshi never went to that extent, although it would have been a big twist for fans.

In Shonen, the main protagonists ‘ fathers have always been big shots and powerful characters in their respective series. However, it seems like Horikoshi didn’t want to take this route. We all know how All Might stepped up to be the father figure in Deku’s life, and fans will always remember it this way.

Although the MHA series has ended, a part of the fanbase still believes that his father could make a debut in a prequel. Until then, we are never going to learn about Hisashi Midoriya’s character in My Hero Academia. In the meantime, what do you think about Kohei’s decision to omit Deku’s father from the series?
