- Microsoft Word's default font is Calibri, but you can change it to your preferred option any time.
- To switch to a different default font, go to Fonts > Select a different font > click Set As Default.
- You can set a custom font as default by installing it on Windows and choosing the same in the Font menu.
Microsoft Word has tons of options to customize the way you write, and one of the elementary customizations you can make to instantly add character to your document is by changing the font style. Word’s default font style is Calibri, which is nice, but we can do better thanks to a lot of preloaded fonts. Here’s how you can change the default font style in Microsoft Word.
Change Default Font in Microsoft Word
The easiest way to change the default font style in Microsoft Word is from the Font menu. Here’s how to do it.
- In Microsoft Word, right-click anywhere in the text field and select Font.
- In the popup window that opens, you can choose from tons of fonts.
- Next, choose the Font style, i.e., Regular, Bold, Italic, etc.
- Lastly, choose the size. The default size is 12.
- Click the Set As Default button and another dialogue box should appear asking if you want to set the font for all documents.
- Check the All documents based on the Normal template option.
- Finally, click OK.
And that’s how you can change the default font style in Microsoft Word.
Apply a Custom Font in Microsoft Word
If you don’t like any of the fonts in the font menu, you could always install a custom font from the internet and use it in Microsoft Word. Here’s how to do that:
- Download a font you like from the web. We recommend checking Google Fonts (website) or Fontspace (website) as they offer a slew of fonts to download and apply.
- Once downloaded, extract the font and install the style of font you’d like to use in Word.
- You can install a font by right-clicking on its .otf file and clicking on Install.
- Once installed, search for the font’s name in Microsoft Word’s Font menu and click on the Set As Default option, as mentioned above.
And voilà! You now have a custom font installed and ready to use in Microsoft Word. Open an empty document and start typing to check if you can use the font.
