1. Civil War References

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man features some easter eggs that resonate directly with Captain America: Civil War. First off, when Peter stops the runaway truck from colliding with a bus, it is the same in Captain America: Civil War. Tony Stark refers to the incident while recruiting Spider-Man in his team.

The opening sequence of your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man where “Queens” is displayed on screen is the same as the movie. Another major easter egg in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is the sequence where Norman Osborn, meets Peter which is a scene-by-scene recreation of when Tony Stark visits Peter to recruit Spider-Man.

2. Multiple Pop Culture References

When Spider-Man saves Harry Osborn from muggers in the series, one of the thugs, Stevie Sherman, starts live streaming, and comments start flooding in making fun of the mugs being beaten up as well as Spider-Man’s wanky costume. Here, the comments were not random and had easter eggs rooted in pop culture. One comment stated, “Kick his ass, Sea-Bass!” which is taken from Jim Carrey’s starring movie, Dumb and Dumber.

Another comment advertising their channel asked people to follow for better content, and the user was Screwball. In Marvel comics, Screwball is a female supervillain who live-streams her feats and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #559, released in 2008. Last but not least, a comment by user checkle05 said, “u got beat up by a guy wearing hockey pads, lmao,” which looks to be a reference from the legendary 2008 movie The Dark Knight.

3. Peter’s Lab Members at Oscorp

When Peter joins Oscorp as an intern, he is greeted by Asha, Jeanne Foucault, Amadeus Cho, and Dr. Carla Connor, working under Dr. Bentley Wittman. They might seem like regular co-workers, but each one of them is taken from the long cadre of heroes and villains in Marvel comics. Asha hails from Wakanda and, in the comics, has the power to absorb and reflect light at will, giving her the ability to disappear.

Amadeus Cho is a super-intelligent hero who can turn into a powerful character named Brawn by absorbing Gamma energy, exactly like the Hulk. Jeanne Foucault in Marvel Comics is a trainee at the Avengers Academy and is a polymath who can learn languages, math, and any skill at superhuman speeds. Lastly, Dr. Carla Connors is a gender-swapped Dr. Curt Connors, who also has an amputated hand. There is a possibility that in future episodes of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, we could see her turn into the lizard as well.

4. Peter’s Friends

In your friendly neighborhood, Spider-Man, we see that Peter becomes friends with a girl named Nico, with whom he was supposed to attend Midtown High. However, due to the fight between Doctor Strange and the Venom variant, Midtown High was severely damaged and they had to join Rockford T. Bales High. There, Peter runs into Pearl, a senior he has a crush on but before he can make a move, he finds out that she is dating Lincoln, the star quarterback of the school.

Later, Lincoln and Peter were put on the same team for a science project, and they became friends. All of these characters are taken from Marvel comics, where Nico is a superhero named Sister Grimm, Lincoln is a supervillain named Tombstone, and Pearl is a  Filipino superhero named Wave.

5. Spider-Man 2 (2004) Reference

In the second episode of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, we see that Peter catches a thief who had stolen money from a pizza store. If you pay attention to the name of the pizza store, it is called “Pizza Time!” which is a reference to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. In the movie, when Peter arrives to deliver pizza, he says “Pizza Time” to the receptionist but has to give away the pizza for free because he arrived late.

6. Amazing Fantasy Comic

In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, we see that the comic book Peter fell asleep while reading is titled Amazing Adult Fantasy #14, which was later retitled Amazon Fantasy. This was an anthology comic book that was discontinued but was also the one that introduced Spider-Man who was later given his solo comic run titled The Amazing Spider-Man.

7. Multiple Spider-Suit Designs

In the series, we see that Peter is working on a new design for his costume and has scribbled down multiple costumes in his diary. These costumes are a reference to two of the most iconic artists who drew Spider-Man for Marvel comics. The designer in question is John Romita Sr who worked on Amazing Spider-Man starting with issue #39 issued in 1966, and Mark Bagley, who created the bigger, bug-eyed lenses seen majorly in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic run.

8. Crusher Hogan

In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s opening credits, we see a shot of a masked Peter who goes against a wrestler to test his powers. This wrestler is none other than Crusher Hogan, against whom he had to stay in the ring for 3 minutes to win a good amount of cash in the comics. Hogan made his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 and was also seen in the first Spider-Man (2002) movie directed by Sam Raimi.

9. Roxxon Oil

When Peter tells Nico about his internship at Oscorp, she taunts him by saying, “If you take a side gig at Roxxon Oil, I’m staging an intervention.” Roxxon Oil is a powerful corporation in the MCU and plays a very important role in the rise of multiple supervillains who appear through Marvel Comics. This is the very company responsible for the creation of Sidewinder, a villain who will be played by Giancarlo Esposito in Captain America: Brave New World.
