Xiaomi Redmi S2: Everything We Know So Far About the Upcoming Budget Phone

Xiaomi is expected to launch a new entry-level device, dubbed the Redmi S2, in “select global markets according to a recent report from XDA.

The XDA Developers report also suggests that the company might launch the device in the Chinese and Indian markets, however, it doesn’t comment on a global release for the Redmi S2.

The report cites firmware files obtained by XDA user @FunkyHuawei, which revealed the most of the key specifications and other details about the upcoming budget phone.

The upcoming Xiaomi Redmi S2 has also been spotted on Chinese regulatory authority TENAA’s website and the listing confirms all the details found within the firmware files. It also shows us the phone’s basic design.

Display

In terms of specifications, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 will feature a 6-inch 18:9 1440x720p display and will be available in three different RAM/storage variants – 2/16GB, 3/32GB, and 4/64GB. The device will feature a 3,000mAh battery, which will be powering the Snapdragon 625 SoC.

Cameras

Despite being a budget device, the Redmi S2 will feature a dual camera setup on the back with a Sony 12MP sensor coupled with a Samsung 5MP sensor. On the front, the device will feature a 5MP selfie shooter from Samsung. The cameras on the device will include electronic image stabilization (EIS) and portrait mode, thanks to the dual camera setup. Additionally, the device will also feature a face unlock feature, which will make use of the 5MP front camera. The device will also include a microSD card slot for expansion.

MIUI and Battery Life

In terms of software, the Redmi S2 will run MIUI 9 based on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. Coupled with the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 and the 3,000mAh battery, the Redmi S2 is expected to be quite the performer when it comes to battery life and the higher RAM variants might also be great for multitasking and gaming. Upon launch, the Redmi S2 will be available in 9 color variants, including White, Silver, Gray, Black, Gold, Rose Gold, Blue, Red, and Pink.

Launch and Availability

While Xiaomi hasn’t released any information about the upcoming device yet, the company is expected to announce the device shortly as it has already passed TENAA certification. We are yet to get an official confirmation about a launch event for the S2, however, Xiaomi has just unveiled the Redmi 6X in China, which is a slightly beefier version of the Redmi S2 in terms of specs.
