When it comes to pirates’ history in One Piece, we always go back to Roger’s times, as he was the one who kicked off the great pirate era. However, even before Roger stepped in, an infamous pirate ruled the seas through his sheer strength and might, none other than Rocks D. Xebec. One can even say he used to be the unofficial king of the pirates before Roger was declared one. Then this man was considered to be the mightiest rival of Roger.

Every pirate has a golden dream before they set out to the seas, and for Rocks, it was to become the King of the World. He was said to be a devoted follower of Davy Jones. Thus, Rock’s path to dominance is said to have left a trail of destruction, and the man wasn’t afraid of uncovering the true mysteries labeled as taboo by the World Government.

Rocks put together a crew full of powerful individuals, such as Whitebeard, Big Mom, Kaido, and many more, to form the most notorious pirate crew of all time, Rocks Pirates. They started out as an independent crew on the Hachinosu island, and Rocks soon went on to become the captain of the Rocks Pirates.

What Does Rocks D. Xebec Look Like?

Oda continued his tradition of introducing a legendary character with just a silhouette in the story with Rocks D. Xebec. Thus, One Piece fans have been waiting with bated breath to get a glimpse of this man’s appearance for six long years. The wait is finally over as Oda unveiled Xebecs’ character design in One Piece chapter 1154.

As you would expect, Rocks bears an uncanny resemblance to his son, Blackbeard, right down to the chaotic eyes, unhinged laugh, etc. While these features deepen the father-son mirroring, Rocks’ design is not just a copy-paste of his son’s appearance. In fact, Xebec appears to be the deadlier version of Blackbeard with two-tone spiked hair, a scar slashing across his eye, etc.

Rocks D. Xebec was introduced very late in the story, precisely in the Wano Country arc. It was Sengoku who mentioned the existence of Rocks first in the anime episode 958 or chapter 957. After continuing to appear in the story as a silhouette for seven years, Oda let Rocks D. Xebec officially debut in the Elbaf arc in One Piece chapter 1154. Xebec’s introduction is yet to be adapted in the anime at the time of writing this article.

What Was Rocks D. Xebec’s Bounty?

Gol D. Roger’s 5,564,800,000 berries remain as the highest bounty in One Piece. If there is a character who has the chance of beating this gigantic bounty, it’s Rocks D. Xebec. In One Piece chapter 1154, Oda revealed that Rocks is the first pirate to kill a Marine Admiral in the history of the series. This incident happened during a Reverie 56 years ago.

Killing an admiral put Xebecs on the World Government’s most wanted list, but Xebec was successfully able to vanish into the shadows after this ruthless incident. However, that didn’t stop the World Government from issuing a hefty bounty, too big to ignore. Oda still hasn’t disclosed the exact bounty amount for Xebec’s head, but it’s a massive bounty, and we expect the reveal to happen very soon.

The biggest revelation regarding Rocks happened recently in the One Piece manga. It is now confirmed that Rocks is the father of the current Yonko, Blackbeard. Rock’s character design easily gave it away what fans have been theorizing for years now. Earlier, St. Saturn remarked that Blackbeard’s lineage is special, and we now get it after Oda revealed the father of the Yonko.

Similar to how the pirate king’s son, Ace, chose to carry his mother’s name (Portgas) instead of his father’s, Blackbeard must have adopted his mother’s last name (Marshal) instead of going by Rocks. We don’t know if Blackbeard rejected his father’s last name to hide his true identity or deliberately decided to inherit his mother’s name out of spite.

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, we are set to learn more about the connection between the father and son in the story soon.

Even before we got to see Rocks’ powers in One Piece, the other characters always spoke of him as one of the mightiest pirates. That had us wondering how strong Rocks was and if he was stronger than Roger in the past. Well, the latest chapters of the One Piece manga are bringing in the answers we have been hoping to learn. First, Rocks D. Xebec is confirmed to be a powerful swordsman in One Piece chapter 1155.

Rocks sword attacks were famous for blasting everything in sight like a gigantic hammer or canonball – One Piece Narrator

Interestingly, when Rocks struck Loki with his sword, this sword attack almost resembled Roger’s and Shanks’ Divine Departure (Kamusari) move. We still don’t know the name and type of the sword Roger owned, but we hope to learn it soon. In addition, when Rocks clashed against Harald in the Holy Land, it was revealed that the legend also possessed the Conqueror’s Haki.

Since Rocks is established to be a broken and overpowered character in the One Piece universe, he is expected to be a master of all forms of haki. If you are wondering why we haven’t talked about Rocks’ devil fruit, it deserves a separate section, which you can find right below.

Since Rocks D. Xebec was revered to be the greatest pirate in his prime before Roger came into the picture, it is expected that Rocks possessed a legendary Devil Fruit and all forms of Haki in One Piece. Oda is taking his time to reveal Rock’s devil fruit power, but fans have also been actively theorizing what could have been Rocks’ devil fruit power in One Piece.

As we now know, Blackbeard is Rocks’ son, which gives us a clue to discover Rocks’ Devil Fruit in the series. As Blackbeard went to great lengths (killing his crewmate) to secure the Yami Yami no Mi devil fruit power, his father could have been the previous user of the dark-dark fruit. There is a long-running theory that Rocks was the legendary doctor who used the Ope Ope no Mi devil fruit, which is why Blackbeard was after that devil fruit as well.

Based on the mountain slicing that happened during his debut, there are a few other options, and you can discover all the potential devil fruits in our speculative guide here.

Rocks Meets Imu

As if killing an admiral or kidnapping five kings isn’t enough, Rocks achieved another remarkable feat unmatched by any other pirate in history, which is that he met Imu face to face by infiltrating the chamber of flowers in Mary Geoise.

The One Piece narrator emphasized that Rocks knew he could not do anything against the god-like figure Imu in their homeland. However, he marked his presence by delivering a chilling warning to Imu before making his escape from the flower room.

I will be back right here!! – Rocks D. Xebec

Now, this unexpected encounter between Rocks and Imu has got us thinking about whether Imu played a role in Xebec’s death after God Valley. As Blackbeard inherited his father’s will, we can speculate that Blackbeard vs. Imu is definitely on the cards.

What Happened to Rocks D. Xebec?

When his treasure on Hachinosu Island was stolen by the World Government, Rocks was infuriated, and his crew decided to raid the God Valley island and retrieve his treasure. Little did Rocks know that this incident would mark the end of his life. It took the combined efforts of Gol D. Roger, Monkey D. Garp, and the God’s Knights to defeat Rocks in the God Valley. Shortly after the defeat, the Rocks Pirate crew was disbanded.

This was a pivotal event in One Piece history where Roger got the chance to defeat his rival. Garp went on to be called the Hero of the Marines, and many more. More importantly, the members of the Rocks crew, such as Whitebeard, Big Mom, Kaido, Shiki, and everyone else, went their separate ways to create some of the most powerful pirate crews we have seen in the story.

However, their fallen captain met his demise shortly after his defeat in the God Valley Incident. Although we don’t know how Rocks succumbed to his end, Loki strongly stated that the World Government killed him. Since Oda is showcasing Rocks’ adventures in the manga, there is a chance we might get to learn more about Rocks’ death.

That’s everything we know about the iconic pirate Rocks in the story so far. We will be updating all the new details about his character, which will be revealed in the upcoming chapters here. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, let us know your thoughts about Rocks in the comments below.
