Samsung recently announced the Galaxy S9 after a lot of teasing. The company’s latest flagship device packs in a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display, whereas its elder brother, the Galaxy S9+ flaunts a 6.2-inch QHD+ display. While the latter one has already received praises for its camera, the display panel, which uses the same technology on both the devices, is now getting its fair share of accolades.

As analyzed by DisplayMate, the Super AMOLED display on the Samsung Galaxy S9 is the best smartphone display on the market. According to the company’s reports, the screen on Samsung’s latest handset showed consistent Top Tier display performance and became the first display to receive All Green ratings in all of DisplayMate’s lab test and measurement categories.

While iPhone X might have been the researcher’s pick for last year, the Galaxy S9 has been given the top spot, by matching and even setting new smartphone display records in several categories. These categories include highest absolute color accuracy, highest peak display brightness, largest native color gamut, highest contrast ratio, and lowest screen reflectance. What’s more is that all those features are present on the S9 while preserving the power efficiency as found on the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8, both which were previously praised for their displays.

Based on our extensive Lab Tests and Measurements, the Galaxy S9 has an Impressive Display that establishes many new Display Performance Records, earning DisplayMate’s Best Performing Smartphone Display Award, and receiving our highest ever A+ grade.

Despite the fact that the panels on the S9/S9+ are physically the same size as those on the Galaxy S8/S8+, DisplayMate states that the picture quality and color accuracy have been significantly improved via precision factory display calibration. According to their team, the S9’s absolute color accuracy is “virtually indistinguishable from perfect,” earning it the highest-ever A+ grade.

Apart from that, the display that can reach up to 1130 nits via auto-brightness, which is 20% brighter than the S8’s screen. The DCI-P3 figures come in at 141%, and it’s one of the first displays to reach this figure by using a “Deep Red” OLED. As for sRGB, the S9’s display can manage a coverage of 113%. Both of those figures are the best that DisplayMate has ever measured in a smartphone OR tablet. This is not where the praises end. The Galaxy S9’s screen has a reflectance of merely 4.4%, and color shift is rated at an extremely low 1.1 JNCD at 30 degrees, both of which are the lowest that DisplayMate has ever measured.

The fact that DisplayMate marked the Galaxy S9 as the best display isn’t entirely surprising, considering they’ve previously appreciated almost all of the Galaxy devices for their displays. Add to fact that even their last year’s pick, the iPhone X, made use of a Samsung panel, so it was kind of expected to see S9 come out as the winner. Nonetheless, it is always nice to see the actual numbers in comparisons to its competitors, to help us understand as to what extent has Samsung beaten other players’ best (and its own too).
