Pokemon GO Mega Gyarados Raid Guide: Weakness & Counters

In Short
  • The Mega Gyarados in Pokemon GO is one formidable opponent.
  • While this Pokemon is resistant to fire, ground, and rock, its weaknesses include electric, grass, fighting, bug, or fairy Pokemon.
  • Mega Gyarados has a lot of good counters including Gradevoir, Sceptile, Heracross, and more.

Like Mega Alakazam, a giant creature you must watch out for is Mega Gyarados, returning for the June 2024 mega raids. An evolved form of the popular Pokemon taken care of by Misty, this Pokemon is a force to be reckoned with. The Pokemon will join the Mega Raid rotation, replacing Mega Alakazam on June 10-19. So, to defeat Mega Gyarados, keep reading our dedicated raid guide below.

Mega Gyarados Strengths

Remember a few important points if you are a new player fighting this Pokemon for the first time. Mega Gyarados is a Water/Dark-type Pokemon, which means it comes with certain strong traits. This Pokemon’s strengths include being strong against fire, ground, and rock. To even join the fight, avoid using any of the above element-type Pokemon.

Mega Gyarados Weaknesses

However, like strengths, Mega Gyarados also comes with a set of weaknesses in Pokemon GO. If you use electric, Grass, fighting, bug, or fairy-type monsters, you’ll be a formidable opponent against this creature.

Since this Pokemon has two types of elements, it will take damage if any of the mentioned Pokemon joins the battle. So, bringing Pokemon like Bulbasaur, Lucario, Jigglypuff, etc will be extremely helpful against Mega Gyarados.

Mega Gyarados Counters

Since we know what damages this Pokemon, let’s look at some of the preferable Pokemon you should bring to the mega raid. The best Mega Gyarados counters are:

  • Gradevoir or Mega Gradevoir: (Charm and Dazzling Gleam)
  • Sceptile or Mega Sceptile: (Fury Cutter and Frenzy Plant)
  • Heracross or Mega Heracross: (Counter and Mega Horn)
  • Venusaur or Mega Venusaur: (Vine whip and Frenzy Plant)
  • Scizor or Mega Scizor: (Fury Cutter and X-Scissor)
  • Beedrill or Mega Beedrill: (Bug Bite and X-Scissor)

I suggest bringing over either a Gradevoir, Sceptile, or Heracross. These three are extremely strong against the Pokemon in question. Otherwise, bring yourself any of the Pokemon mentioned above.

How to Defeat Mega Gyarados and Add to Your Team

Thankfully, it’s easy to add Mega Gyarados to your team. After you join a Mega Raid with your friends, battle the Pokemon. I highly suggest taking multiple pals along since going against this monster solo is a death sentence.

After defeating the Mega Gyarados, two things will happen. If you never had a Gyarados in your Pokedex, you’ll receive a bonus encounter. You can now capture one and add it to your Pokedex. With the Gyarados in your team, you’ll receive Mega Energy. Once you have 300 Mega Energy, you can evolve your Gyarados to a Mega Gyarados.

This month, shiny Mega Gyarados are available in the rotation as part of the Mega Raids. The spawn rate is low, and adding them to your party is even tougher than one might expect. However, they will spawn with better rates during the Mega Raid event.

Does a Mega Gyarados have an evolution?

Mega Gyarados is the ultimate form of the Pokemon. As such, it has no further evolution.
