OnePlus had left no stone unturned with the launch of OnePlus 6 last evening at London. The device’s pricing in India is only what drew our attention to the launch event in Mumbai, India which happened today.
But a major attraction from the presentation was the OnePlus 6 Avengers Special Edition which the company reserves exclusively for India and China – sorry fans in the West. We had a chance to tinker with the device after the event today and here are our initial thoughts about the device.
Design
Let me put it clearly – the OnePlus 6 Avengers Special Edition is pretty much a cosmetically enhanced device with the same specifications and basic design as OnePlus 6. But that does not mean it has nothing special to offer. To begin with, the latest Avengers-themed “flagship killer” is dressed in black and gold – obviously to match Thanos’ gauntlet.
The black, just like the other three variants of the OnePlus 6 is covered under glass. Beneath the flawlessly carved glass is the Kevlar finish inspired by the iconic OnePlus snap-on covers from the company’s second device (as well as protective cases for later generations).
Thanks to the glass surface, the pattern on the back shimmers in strong light and changes in a way that reminds me of the gorgeous diamond-cut pattern on the emeritus Nexus 4 from Google. Below the sensor lies a OnePlus logo in golden color and farther down is an Avengers logo with Marvel branding – this is in gold as well.
The alert slider on the smartphone is also soaked in a gold paint which makes it easily identifiable. The rest of the buttons blend seamlessly with the metal frame which is matte black in color. This is both good and bad as it gives a minimalistic look to the device but also makes it difficult to find the button – or it could be the case during initial usage.
Display
As I said, the observable changes that distinguish the OnePlus 6 Avengers edition from the standard versions. The display is the same 6.3-inch Full HD display with 19:9 aspect ratio. Yes, you don’t need to beat the bush about the notch, which is clearly present.
You can learn more about the display by reading our in-depth first impressions of the OnePlus 6.
Camera and Hardware
Internally, all the variants share the same configurations except that the Avengers edition comes only in one configuration i.e. 8GB RAM with 256GB of storage. The camera setup is the same as the standard OnePlus 6 and we did not find any hidden special features or camera filters.
Software
In terms of the user interface, there are two noteworthy features in the OnePlus 6 Avengers edition. First, it comes with five wallpapers inspired by Avengers: Infinity War. If you’re an Avengers fan, these special wallpapers will not only grab your attention but their details will leave a heavy impression on you – maybe as heavy as Thor’s hammer.
The second addition is a special Avengers theme in which the accent color change to sand-like yellow hue. I feel blessed to see that OnePlus didn’t opt for a golden theme as that would have drowned the grace of the classy smartphone. We were told that there might be some easter eggs but we couldn’t find anything in our brief exposure to the device.
OnePlus 6 Silk White and Midnight Black
We showed you a preview of the Mirror black design of the OnePlus 6. At the India launch, we were also able to handle the Silk White and Midnight Black variants and we were really impressed by the company’s hard work in perfecting these finished – especially because all three designs are made out of glass but don’t feel so.
Silk White which comes with a non-slippery matte finish, has soft gold accents to compliment the serene color. OnePlus claims that the back comprises of seven different layers and uses crushes pearls for its finish. Trust me, when I held the device I was convinced about that part. This variant will be available as a limited editions model in the first week of June.
The Midnight Black, on the other hand, reminded me of the OnePlus 5 and the 5T. Despite being made out of glass, the matte finish gave the impression of being crafted from metal or a high-grade brushed aluminum. The variant did not attract any fingerprint but it is prone to oil smudges and might have a beating when held with sweaty palms.
OnePlus 6 Avengers Edition: Pricing and Availablity
The Avengers-themed OnePlus 6 with 256GB of storage comes at Rs. 44,999 and will be available in India starting May 29 i.e. a week after the sale of the other three variants.
While the device is overall a looker and a deal to die for, for Avengers fans, OnePlus did not really elaborate on the distinctive features of the device born out of the partnership with Marvel. Unlike the Star Wars OnePlus 5T which had a white finish resembling the surface of the planet – Crait, there was no specific reason to choose Kevlar in this case.
