Professor Clover was a Member of the D Clan
In case you forgot, during Robin’s flashback in the Enies Lobby arc (one of the best One Piece arcs), the elderly gentleman known as Clover was revealed to be the highly experienced professor and archeologist of the Tree of Knowledge.
One Piece chapter 1120 showcased a brief flashback of the conversation between Professor Clover and Dr. Vegapunk at Punk Hazard. The professor told Vegapunk his backstory of how one of his closest acquaintances, who carried D in their name, was killed in front of him.
It was revealed to be none other than the Clover’s elder brother. Clover had to lie and pretend that he was merely a friend to his brother to save himself from the wrath of the Marines and the World Government that day. He could have been killed along with his brother just because they carried a certain initial – D – in their name.
Furthermore, his full name – Clou D. Clover – was also disclosed in chapter 1120, proving that the professor and the Clover family have been D clan members for a very long time.
Everyone is aware of Clover’s obsession with discovering the real history of this realm and the Void Century. But we didn’t know that this obsession stemmed from the guilt of lying and saving himself that day.
To honor the memory of his brother and all the carriers of D, he went on expeditions to learn and uncover the truth. Even though Dr. Vegapunk refused to help him back then, he inherited his will after his death during the Ohara Incident. This led to Vegapunk broadcasting a message to the rest of the world now to let everyone know the truth shrouded by the World Government.
