One Piece: The Three Stages of Imu’s Abyss-Themed Devil Contracts, Explained

For a long time, One Piece fans believed there were only two main power systems in One Piece, which are Haki and the Devil Fruits. However, author Oda has been redefining the powers of the One Piece world since the introduction of the Five Elders. In the ongoing Elbaf arc, a new power system has been specially made for the important members of the World Government, and it is tied to their creator, Imu. The recent chapters have slowly started to reveal the different tiers of contract one can get into by receiving the Abyss Mark, and we have discussed them in detail here.

Last updated on December 19, 2025, to include the latest details about the demonic powers that come with each covenant type.

Making a deal with the devil is no longer a common phrase in One Piece, as the latest One Piece Chapter 1167 revealed the three stages of demonic power that Imu shares with her servants through the Abyss Mark. It’s not the Marines, but instead the higher officials of the World Government, including the Five Elders and the God Knights, who currently wield the devilish powers in the One Piece story.

All one needs to do to gain access to Imu’s powers is to receive the Abyss Mark on their arm and enter into a contract with the god. As the Five Elders stated, three different stages of devil contracts can be made, namely: The Shallows Covenant, The Depths Covenant, and The Abyssal Covenant. As you can see here, the titles of the contracts appear to have been inspired by the depths of the sea, which is another significant hint that Imu is the Sea Devil in One Piece.

Each stage of the contract or covenant made with the god, Imu, has its own perks and powers. So, let’s look into each tier based on everything we know about them so far:

The Shallows Covenant

The Shallows Covenant seems to be the contract made by the lowest-tier members of the God’s Knight, ‘A Devoted Blade of God.’ Gunko started as a God’s Blade during the God Valley incident. Now, King Harald became ‘A Devoted Blade of God’ along with Shanks by accepting the Shallows Covenant. Interestingly, the devoted blades, Harald and Shanks, had an Abyss Mark on their arms that resembled the symbol of the World Government.

The Shallows Covenant is a mere trace of a bond…

Since it is more of a beginner’s contract, the access to Imu’s powers is minimal. Those who accepted the Shallows Covenant don’t directly come under the control of Imu, and they can only use the Abyss mark to travel between locations through the Abyss.

The Depths Covenant

The next tier of agreement is called the Depths Covenant, and it is described as an exclusive contract for only thirteen individuals in the story. Since the Shallows Covenant is reserved for the entry-level Blade of Gods, the Depths Covenant is the agreement made between the full-fledged God’s Knight members and Imu.

Thou art an Undying Knight in service to Imu…

Those who entered the Depths devil contract with Imu seem to possess an upgraded version of the Abyss mark tattoo, where a curved horn is added to the World Government symbol. When King Harald was anointed as a Holy Knight, the powers that come with the Depths Covenant were revealed. In addition to gaining travel access, the knights become immortal with the ability to regenerate, and their respective strength is significantly enhanced.

But there is a catch with these power upgrades. In exchange for inheriting these powers, those who have accepted the Depths Covenant lose control of their body to Imu. Even if they don’t wish to do something, they must obey Imu’s orders at all costs.

The Abyssal Covenant

The final level of Imu’s contract is called the Abyssal Covenant. It’s also similar to the Depths Covenant, as it’s an exclusive covenant between Imu and the 13 characters. However, the variety of powers bestowed must be the highest here, as it is the deepest level of the covenant with the god Imu. So, basically, all the powers shared by Imu can be accessed by characters with the Abyssal contract.

It is highly likely that the Gorosei (Five Elders) and the important members of the God’s Knight received the Abyssal contract. Because they are directly below Imu, and their god can take control of their body as they desire. For example, Imu has currently taken over Gunko’s body in Elbaf and took control of St. Saturn’s body during the God Valley incident.

In addition, those who have accepted the Abyssal Covenant are expected to inherit devilish powers straight from Imu. That will explain the reason behind the Five Elders’ demonic transformations. So, stay tuned for more updates about the final level of powers Imu grants to their most important servants.

Powers Obtained Through the Devil Contract with Imu

Ever since the Five Elders and the Holy Knights’ introduction, we have seen many demonic powers and abilities in One Piece. So, here are all the powers (we know so far) granted by Imu to her servants who entered a contract with them:

  • Abyss Mark: Lets one travel between locations via the dark magic circle.
  • Telepathy: The Five Elders communicated with each other telepathically in the Egghead arc.
  • Regeneration: Regenerate their injured body parts.
  • Improved Strength: The Holy Knights’ strength multiplies once they accept a covenant.
  • Immortality: The Five Elders have been existing for centuries, blessed with the gift of immortality.
  • Submission of Will: In return for Immortality and enhanced strength, the knights will obey and follow Imu’s orders without any disagreement.
  • Demonic Powers: Each of the Five Elders acquired a yokai-based demonic power.
  • Becoming a Vessel: Both St. Saturn and Gunko have become a vessel for Imu to take control of.
