One Piece fans didn’t expect the musical connection between Gunko and Brook in the ongoing Elbaf arc. Oda introduced us to a new God’s Knight member and set her up as a massive fan of Soul King’s magical music. Everyone in the fandom believed this was done just for gags, as the creator is known for his stunts. However, with the release of One Piece manga chapter 1149, Oda has teased that the connection between Brook and Gunko goes beyond music.
The much-awaited meeting between Gunko and Brook happened in the manga recently, but it didn’t go as we had hoped. Gunko beat her music idol to a pulp after he refused to join her on the seas and become her slave. We thought this was the end of the road for them, but Oda has surprised fans like he does time and again.
After Gaban surrenders to Gunko, the latter takes him out with her arrow devil fruit powers. In that moment, we see Colon‘s desperate cries for his father, which catch Gunko off guard, triggering a poignant memory with Brook from the past.
The small flashback in the final panel of One Piece chapter 1149 first showcases a girl resembling Gunko crying out for her father. Gunko then remembers another memory where a little kid dances to a song with Brook in his human form. In the flashback, Brook reveals to her that his dream is to be a pirate. So, this memory must be from before he joined the Rumbar Pirates.
All the details in this backstory indicate that Gunko might be Brook’s daughter. If that isn’t the case, Gunko could also be Brook’s adopted daughter, similar to how Belle-mere adopted Nami, Zef adopted Sanji, and so on.
Many fans expect that she might be the daughter of Yorki, Brook’s ex-captain. We are unclear about how they are related at the moment since Gunko is possessed by Imu. But we will learn more about Gunko and Brook’s relationship in the upcoming One Piece chapters.
Brook and Gunko’s relationship going beyond music is one of the unexpected twists in the story so far. Oda has always kept Brook’s backstory a mystery until now, but he is finally revealing about his past, similar to what he did with Kuma’s past in the Egghead arc.
