Minecraft Nautilus: How to Find, Tame, and Ride the Aquatic Mob

Finding this mob can take some time, and there might not be enough at a single location. So, if you have friends on your server, having one of these mobs for each can be tough. Moreover, there might be unfortunate instances of losing this mob while raiding Ocean Monuments. While riding this new mob, you’ll never have to think twice about your oxygen bar, too.

Where to Find Nautilus in Minecraft

The Nautilus mob is found deep beneath the ocean’s surface in all ocean biomes. If you are looking for the best chances of spotting one, consider heading to Shipwrecks and areas with dense seaweed or seagrass. You will find the Nautilus mob swimming gracefully in the natural spawning locations mentioned above.

In addition, if you’re not playing on ‘Peaceful’ difficulty in survival mode, stay on the lookout for the Zombie Nautilus with a Drowned. These mobs are a real pain in the neck and deal a good amount of damage if you aren’t wearing a decent armor set.

What Does the Nautilus Eat in Minecraft

The Nautilus eats only Pufferfish. You cannot feed them any other fish, like Salmon, Cod, or any other tropical fish, whether dead or alive.

Pufferfish can be found in warm and lukewarm ocean biomes. To catch them, you can either use a water bucket or a fishing rod. The former gives you an alive pufferfish in hand, while the latter gives you a dead one. But no need to stress out since the Nautilus feeds on both of them.

How to Tame a Nautilus in Minecraft

Once you spot a Nautilus, then comes the fun part of taming the mob. To tame a Nautilus, you must feed it Pufferfish.

Pufferfish is available through fishing. With an 11.1% chance to catch this fish, it won’t take long with a fishing rod in Minecraft. Make sure you catch the Pufferfish while fishing and not using a bucket.

That said, follow the steps below:

• Approach the Nautilus mob calmly without scaring it.
• Once near, right-click on the Nautlius while holding the Pufferfish.
• It might take a single fish or a few of them, based on its health, so make sure you carry more than one.
• When the Nautilus is tamed, red hearts will appear over its head, indicating that it trusts you.

How to Ride a Nautilus in Minecraft

Now that your Nautilus is tamed, it’s time to strap a saddle and ride the mob underwater. Riding Nautilus is thrilling, and it doesn’t take anything special for the whole process. So, here’s how you can ride a Nautilus in Minecraft:

• Just like horses and striders, you will require a saddle to mount a Nautilus.
• It is easy to make a saddle in Minecraft as it requires three leather and a single iron ingot.
• Once you have it, hold the saddle in your hand, go near a tamed Nautilus, and right-click on its body.
• This will place the saddle on top of the Nautilus. Now, you can right-click the Nautilus again to ride and control it.

There’s an optional choice for extra protection on this water companion. You can make a Nautilus armor in Minecraft and equip it on your friend. This will boost its defense and give it an elegant look as well.

Riding a Nautilus is similar to controlling a horse on land. Simply use the movement keys on your keyboard or controller, and it will move in the respective direction. To remove both the saddle and the armor, you can use a shear on it.

All Nautilus Abilities While Riding

As shown in the Minecraft Live September 2025, the Nautilus has a dash ability. Similar to camels, you will notice the XP bar turn into a dash meter. To charge up your dash, press and hold the jump control key.

Once the key is released, your Nautilus dashes forward. If you perform this trick near the surface of oceans while looking up at the sky, your Nautilus will leap out of the water, creating an epic splash.

While riding the Nautilus, you will get the “Breath of the Nautilus” effect. This passive ability will pause the Oxygen bubbles and allow you to breathe underwater only while riding the mob. So, a game-changer for raiding the structures under the sea, like Ocean Monuments, Ocean Ruins, Shipwrecks, and more.

How to Breed Nautilus in Minecraft

Now comes the exciting part, which is breeding Nautilus in Minecraft. For this, you require a couple of Pufferfish, so ensure that you’ve caught them already while fishing. That said, here are the simple steps to tame the Nautilus:

First, find two Nautiluses, and bring them closer to each other so that they’re in range. Think of this as the same method that you would use while breeding horses, cows, or any other mob in the game.

So, equip the Pufferfish in your hand and feed one to both of them. Hearts will start appearing over the Nautilus heads, and both will enter love mode. A few seconds later, a baby Nautilus will appear next to them, and you will gain a few XP points.

And that’s it. You have successfully bred your first Nautilus. Feeding Pufferfish to a baby Nautilus will show green particles, helping it grow faster. While the baby Nautilus is still young, you cannot ride it using a saddle. Wait for it to grow into an adult, and then both of you can go on underwater adventures or even race your friends.

What Does the Nautilus Drop in Minecraft?

Killing these aquatic mobs won’t do you any good, and honestly, you might not even think of doing that yourself. But for your information, a Nautilus drops 1-3 Experience Points when killed by a player or your tamed wolf. This is far less than what you get for breeding them, so it won’t be a wise decision to kill a Nautilus.

However, if you get into some tricky situations, like being surrounded by a herd of Zombie Nautilus and Drowned riding them, you will have to fight your way out. Moreover, if a Nautilus is wearing an armor piece or a saddle, it’ll drop that too, once killed.
