No matter what, we always get easily tricked by Gege Akutami when it comes to the final battles in his manga. In the intense fight between Okkotsu Tsurugi and Maru, the former gained the upper hand by unleashing Rika, the Queen of Curses. It was Tsurugi’s fight to win, and it seemed as if Tsurugi won as he slashed Maru with the Split Soul Katana at the end of the previous chapter. Just like the Gojo vs Sukuna battle, Gege has turned the tables, and now Tsurugi is on the verge of his death in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapter 21.

Tsurugi Sacrifices His Life in JJK Modulo Chapter 21
The latest JJK Modulo chapter 21 opens up with a flashback conversation between Okkotsu Tsurugi and his grandma, Maki Zenin. As we have seen so far, Maki Zenin points out the similarity between her and her grandson as they share the Heavenly Restriction power-up. Maki tells him about the saddening tale of how she became strong by losing her sister (Mai). Maki’s awakening was recently adapted a couple of weeks ago in JJK Season 3 as well.
Now, years later, Maki expresses her deep regret for not carving a future where both she and her sister Mai, get to live. This incident left an indelible mark on Tsurugi as he watched his grandma crying over her lost sister. If you are wondering why Gege shows all of this amidst a battle, it is because Tsurugi chooses to sacrifice himself, as he doesn’t want a future where he has to kill his friend Maru.
So, Tsurugi dropped his sword and got slashed instead when he was about to deliver the life-ending strike to Maru a few moments ago. Maru’s strike seems to be fatal as Tsurugi collapses to the ground. Even Maru is surprised that his friend sacrificed his life, as he felt that it was wrong to win a battle this way.
We often forget the fact that Maru, Tsurugi, Yuka, and Cross are all just teenagers who are caught up in the conflicts of coexistence. While it seemed like Maru was about to die, Gege flipped the switch, and now it’s Tsurugi who stands on the brink of his death. Tsurugi’s death hasn’t been confirmed in JJK Modulo at the moment.
But a human version of Rika Orimoto appearing before them at the end offers some hope about Tsurugi’s status. Can Maru put everything aside and help his friend? We will have to wait until next week.
