- Mewtwo is one of the strongest Psychic type in Pokemon GO.
- You can catch Mewtwo from raids, research, GBL encounters, and Team GO Rocket boss rewards.
- Mewtwo can also be traded from other players by spending Stardust.
Mewtwo is one of the original fan-favorite Pokemon that continues to dominate the Pokemon GO meta. This Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon is an absolute powerhouse, capable of hitting like a truck. Not only does it boast a highly flexible moveset, but it can also speedrun almost any battle in the game. However, getting your hands on a Mewtwo is a feat in itself.
Unlike many other Legendary Pokemon, Mewtwo doesn’t appear very often; that’s why you should actively play the game. In this guide, we’ve covered everything you need to know about how to get Mewtwo in Pokemon GO.
When is Mewtwo Coming Back in Pokemon GO?
Mewtwo will return to Pokemon GO during the Summer 2026 GO Fest. There is no official announcement from Niantic yet. However, during an official press conference event held in Tokyo, this year’s GO Fest artwork was revealed. The artwork showed Mewtwo alongside some other Pokemon for the Pokemon GO Fest Tokyo 2026.

The first GO Fest event will be held in Tokyo, anywhere between May 29, 2026, and June 1, 2026. Later, the event will take place in Chicago (USA) and Copenhagen (Denmark). Lastly, you can expect a Global GO Fest event after them. Right now, there’s no guarantee whether Mewtwo will be exclusive to the locations or will be made available globally.
Where Can You Find Mewtwo in Pokemon GO and Catch It?
There are multiple options to find Mewtwo in Pokemon GO and catch it. Here are some of them:
- Raid Battles: The most efficient and fastest way to find and catch Mewtwo in Pokemon GO is by participating in 5-star Pokemon GO raids. You can use your Daily Raid Passes or buy Premium Raid Passes from the in-game shop using PokeCoins. Remember to stock up on Potions, Revives, and Berries before participating in raids. Lastly, bring the Pokemon that counter Mewtwo’s Psychic typing.
- Research Encounters: Other than defeating Pokemon Go Raid Bosses, you can sometimes encounter Mewtwo by completing event-themed Special Research Tasks. Currently, there are no event Special Researches that reward a Mewtwo encounter. The Special Research after reaching level 50 in Pokemon GO rewarded players with a Mewtwo encounter when completed. But it has been removed after the new Level Cap balance. You need to actively play the game to not miss out on these events, or you can bookmark our article, as we will update it frequently.
- GBL Rewards Encounters: You can also encounter Mewtwo by participating in Pokemon GO Battle League ranked matches, similar to Trainer Battles. Once you reach rank 20 in GBL, there is a slight chance to encounter a Legendary Pokemon featured in raids, with the pool of other available Pokemon. This isn’t an easy feat, and the chance of encountering one is very random.
- Team GO Rocket Boss Encounter: The Pokemon you can encounter by defeating Team GO Rocket are a shadowed version, and it’s the same for Mewtwo. The only way to obtain a Shadow Mewtwo from Team GO Rocket Boss is by finding Giovanni and defeating him. However, that too depends on the current Takeover event and Giovanni’s lineup in Pokemon GO.
Pokemon GO Mewtwo Trading Cost

Other than finding and catching Mewtwo, you can trade the Legendary Pokemon with your friends. You can find Pokemon GO Friend Codes using different methods and add friends in-game. You can ask them to trade Mewtwo, but that costs a lot of Stardust. That’s why we recommend that you interact with them daily, and increase the Friendship Level as it reduces the Trading Cost. Here’s a list featuring the trading cost of Mewtwo for different Friendship levels:
| Friendship Level | Registered Mewtwo Cost | Unregistered Mewtwo Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Good Friends | 20,000 | 1,000,000 |
| Great Friends | 16,000 | 800,000 |
| Ultra Friends | 1,600 | 80,000 |
| Best Friends | 800 | 40,000 |
Pokemon GO Mewtwo Special Variants and How to Get Them
Like most of the Legendaries in Pokemon GO, Mewtwo also has some special variants in the game: Shiny Mewtwo, Shadow Mewtwo, and Armored Mewtwo. Below, you can find all the details on how you can get each of them.
How to Get Shiny Mewtwo in Pokemon GO

Getting a Shiny Mewtwo is very easy in Pokemon GO, with a shiny rate of 1 in 20. You can participate in Pokemon GO raids and defeat the Mewtwo Raid Boss to encounter one and catch it. However, due to its high shiny rate, similar to other legendaries, it can be easily obtained if you complete 20 Mewtwo raids. If you are lucky, you can even find it before 10 raids.
Other than raids, you can get Shiny Mewtwo from GBL Rewards and Timed Research Encounters. But this will be much harder compared to raid battles, as the chances are very low.
How to Get Shadow Mewtwo in Pokemon GO

The best way to get a Shadow Mewtwo is by participating in Shadow Raids. Shadow Raids are special raid events like Raid Days that take place for a day or two. During the Pokemon GO event, every gym will feature Shadow Mewtwo in raids, which you can challenge to be able to encounter a regular Shadow or a Shiny Shadow Mewtwo (1 in 20 chance). Shadow Mewtwo raids were featured two years ago in Pokemon GO, in March 2024.
Other than shadow raids, you can get Shadow Mewtwo by beating Giovanni in Pokemon GO. Giovanni can be tracked down using Super Rocket Radar during a Team GO Rocket Takeover event. However, the Pokemon you can get depends on Giovanni’s present lineup. As of now, Giovanni’s lineup doesn’t include Mewtwo, i.e., you cannot get one from defeating him. The last time Mewtwo was seen on Giovanni’s lineup was during late 2022 and early 2023.
How to Get Armored Mewtwo in Pokemon GO

Armored Mewtwo is the special variant of Mewtwo that first appeared in the Pokemon anime. Later, it was released in Pokemon GO in 2019, followed by its return during Pokemon Day 2020. As of now, the only way to obtain an Armored Mewtwo is by trading it with players who already have it.
Armored Mewtwo looks like an armored version of Mewtwo. And, its appearance matches its stats. The Armored version has a lower attack, but is more tanky than the normal Mewtwo. That’s why it’s a great Pokemon to use in Ultra League. On the other hand, its CP is very low, which makes it a poor choice for Master League and Raid Battles.
How to Evolve Mewtwo into Mega Mewtwo in Pokemon GO

Mega Mewtwo is currently unavailable in Pokemon GO, and there is no option to evolve Mewtwo into a Mega Mewtwo. However, with the recent announcement of Mewtwo returning in Pokemon GO Fest 2026, fans speculate that Mega Mewtwo might debut in the game.
When Mega Mewtwo releases in the game, we think that you’d need Mega Mewtwo energy to evolve it into its Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y variants, similar to the other Megas in the game. Once more information is out, we will update this section of our guide.
Mewtwo Pokemon GO Best Moveset
