Boruto Two Blue Vortex: How Did Kurama (Nine-Tailed Fox) Revive?

In Short
  • After Naruto's fight with Isshiki Otsutsuki in the Boruto series, Kurama departed from this realm as an after-effect of Baryon mode diminishing his life force.
  • Kurama has now resurrected inside Himawari and revealed to her that death is not permanent for tailed beasts. This proves a tailed beast will eventually come back to life, even if its flesh or soul vanishes.
  • Kurama conjectured his rebirth happened so quickly because Himawari, a descendant of the Uzumaki and Hyuga clans, received an element of the nine-tailed fox's chakra from her father.

Kurama left the world following Naruto’s battle with Isshiki Otsutsuki, the main antagonist of the Boruto series. But from that moment on, everyone was rooting for Kurama, the nine-tailed fox, to rise from the grave and make a grand return. Fast forward to the present, and we received a bright glimmer of hope for Kurama’s return in the follow-up Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga. And in the latest chapter, our beloved nine-tailed fox has made his comeback. But how? Didn’t Kurama die in Boruto? How did Kurama make a comeback, you ask? Let’s find out.

Before we learn about Kurama’s comeback in the Boruto TBV series, we must first revisit his death and its cause. Naruto’s Baryon mode came with a heavy price to pay as Kurama’s life force ceased to exist after his battle against Isshiki Otsutsuki.

Initially, it was claimed that Naruto’s life was on the line after utilizing the Baryon mode, however, it was the other way around. In the final moments between Naruto and Kurama, it was confirmed that Kurama took a hit for Naruto.

As a result of Kurama’s passing, the nine-tailed fox’s powers along with its chakra disappeared from within Naruto. After becoming the strongest member of the Uzumaki clan, Naruto lost his powers in an attempt to protect his family and the Leaf Village. Currently, Naruto and Hinata are stuck inside the Daikokuten where they were sealed by Kawaki.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is living up to its hype and expectations with every chapter’s release. It is a worthy successor to the initial Boruto series and has been well-received by Naruto fans. Chapter 9 of Boruto TBV disclosed that Himawari Uzumaki, Naruto’s daughter, was the source of the nine-tailed fox biju chakra inside the Leaf village.

It was shown that Himawari made her way into the Mental Plane, where the Jinchuriki and their respective tailed-beast (here the nine-tailed fox) can converse with one another.

The appearance confirmed that it is a mini nine-tailed fox and fans were sent into a frenzy after witnessing Kurama’s comeback after more than three years. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 10, after introducing itself, the nine-tailed fox explained how it was able to come back to life in Himawari. Kurama said,

Death is not eternal for us bijuu (tailed beasts). Even if our flesh or soul perishes over time, a kernel of us will sprout somewhere and we will manage to return to life.

This was theorized by fans earlier and it indeed turned into reality in Boruto TBV chapter 10. It is now confirmed that this mini version of the nine-tailed fox is our beloved Kurama coming back to life.

As Himawari hails from the prominent blood of Uzumaki and Hyuga, Kurama speculated that this revival might have happened as Himawari could have inherited a fragment of the nine-tailed fox’s chakra from her father. I hope this will be explained in depth in the future by Kishimoto sensei.

Kurama also remarked that Himawari has a naturally higher affinity to Kurama’s chakra than any of the tailed beasts before which includes Naruto as well. This is a major breakthrough in the series, including for Himawari as she can reach greater heights with the nine-tailed fox’s power even more than her dad (implied).

In the end, they couldn’t discuss this further as Jura interrupted intending to devour Himawari to obtain Kurama’s chakra. When Jura pierced Inojin with his power; it acted as the trigger Naruto’s daughter needed to unlock the Initial Jinchūriki Form similar to how Naruto activated it. Kurama also stated that Himawari totally snapped and together they are set to wreak havoc uncontrollably when the next chapter releases in June.

That said, Kurama is well alive and back in the Boruto series. We knew this day would come one way or the other, and it’s finally here. For now, we’ll have to wait for the next chapter’s release to uncover more secrets about the connection between Himawari and the nine-tailed fox. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts on Kurama’s revival in the comments below.
