Despite the fact that we are all out here waiting for GTA 6, GTA 5’s popularity remains at an all time high. And while the single player mode is amazing, GTA Online is another ballpark altogether. An integral part in that is GTA RP, a whole different world where gamers roleplay in GTA Online. While GTA RP is an old tale to most players, you might be new to GTA 5 itself. What is GTA 5 RP?
To put it very simply, GTA 5 RP is the online space where gamers roleplay as various characters in the fictional world of Los Santos. Think of it as playing an MMO without pre-determined and side quests. However, the quests are for you to think up and explore on the fly.
You can even consider GTA 5 RP as a tabletop RPG, where you create a character and stay in it all the time. GTA 5 RP players play as a wide variety of characters which range from cops, heisters, business owners, taxi drivers, paramedics and much more. As far as things go, your creativity is your only limit.
While not inherently a part of the GTA experience, GTA 5 RP came to be after CFX.re went through a breakthrough around 2016 with the introduction of FiveM. This framework allowed players to mod the GTA Online map to their liking and add custom jobs. GTA 5 took advantage of this through the best GTA RP servers.
As such, GTA 5 RP is a world where gamers all roleplay as different characters with the world reacting to them in real-time. This means you have to stay in character no matter what thereby creating an ecosystem of GTA roleplaying!

To this date, GTA 5 RP is extremely popular among gamers who enjoy it. I’ve personally sunk over 2000 hours playing RP across various servers in the last four years.
Is GTA 5 RP Free?
The simplest and shortest answer to this question is yes, but with conditions. Of course, you must own a copy of GTA 5 to play on GTA 5 roleplaying servers. There are many open servers on FiveM which you can join. However, I suggest against most of them due to a lack of roleplaying quality.
There exist many GTA 5 RP servers that have listing processes. This means you must be allowed to join them before starting a GTA roleplaying session. Players must submit an application form detailing your character and its traits and explaining general server rules.
This is where it gets interesting. If it is a reasonably popular server like NoPixel, you must pay a fee to submit the form. This pricing keeps changing, so you have to keep that in mind.
Other servers, like the recently popular ProdigyRP or the recently launched PurpleRP, don’t have an application submission price. You can go over to their website right now and apply for allowlisting. However, given the popularity of the servers, the wait time for that is relatively high. So, you either play the waiting game or pay a supporter tier and get your application checked a little earlier.
Otherwise, most smaller RP servers are free for everyone to apply and enjoy. So, pick the one with a welcoming community, and have fun.
How to Play GTA 5 RP
Now that you know what GTA roleplaying is, it’s time to learn how to play it. Thankfully, learning how to play GTA 5 RP is quite easy. At the risk of stating the obvious do be aware that you need to own a copy of GTA 5 and an active Internet connection. Additionally, this is only applicable to GTA 5 players on PC.
To start GTA 5 roleplaying, you need a good microphone to speak with gamers. And try not to be awkward. I know it’s easier said than done but some of my best friends were made from GTA 5 RP. Once you’re all set, follow the steps below:
- Make sure you’ve downloaded and set up GTA 5.
- Now proceed to disable anti-virus temporarily. This is important.
- Head over to the FiveM website and download the FiveM client. Once downloaded, keep the launcher in an empty folder on one of your drives.
- Run the FiveM launcher and let it do its thing. FiveM should automatically detect your GTA 5 file. If it doesn’t, navigate to the folder where GTA 5 is installed and continue it yourself.
- Once downloaded, add the FiveM processes and exe to your anti-virus exclusion list. This will ensure your anti-virus doesn’t delete the executables.
- Run FiveM from the start menu through the new icon.
How to Join a GTA 5 RP Server
Once you’re all done setting up FiveM client, you must join a GTA 5 RP server. While there is no set process for it, most GTA roleplaying servers allow you to join through an IP address. You’ll get this in the discord of the respective server.
If it is an allowed-listed server, you’ll need permission. Once you finish that, receive the IP address, hit F8 in FiveM Menus, and type “connect <IP address>” without the brackets and quotes.
