It’s been six years since the Frieren manga began, yet the author hasn’t revealed Ubel’s official age in the source material. Ubel isn’t the only one, as the author hasn’t disclosed the age details of a few other Frieren characters. Now that leaves the option for us to estimate Ubel’s age in the Frieren series.

Since Fern was the youngest mage to pass the First-Class Mage exam (18 at the time), Ubel was definitely older than her. So, based on Ubel’s appearance and other characters’ descriptions of her, Ubel must be in her early or mid 20s in the Frieren series.

Ubel’s Special Magic

Ubel is undoubtedly one of the most powerful mages in the Frieren despite her experience. Her primary ability is cleaving magic, with which she can cut things if she can visualize and feel them. She came up with this magic concept as she grew up watching her sister cutting and sewing clothes often. That’s what made Ubel unstoppable at first, even Sense said she couldn’t stand against her.

The next ability of Ubel, which blew our minds, is that she can also replicate other mages’ special magics, as seen when she copied Wirbel’s binding spell. What makes her so special is that Ubel doesn’t need to learn the mechanics behind the working of a spell. Instead, if she grasps the intent and personal feeling behind a spell, she can recreate it effortlessly.

During Ubel’s debut, she was paired up with Land in the First Class Mage exams. The two may have rubbed each other the wrong way at first, but Ubel begins to grow fond of her partner and tries to understand him as much as possible as they progress through the exam. Since then, Frieren fans have begun shipping these two, and currently, they are one of the most popular ships among the fandom.

Despite the fan shipping, the relationship between Land and Ubel is open to interpretation. The author never confirmed that Ubel is in love with Land at any point in the story. But the latest chapters hint that a romance is blooming between them, so it is up to you to come to a conclusion about their relationship in the story.

Ubel has been giving off malevolent vibes ever since her debut. Now, if you understand the meaning behind Ubel’s name, you can see the author’s intentions behind Ubel’s character right from the beginning. Übel is actually a German word, and it literally translates to “something evil.”

Thus, you can now see that Übel is a fitting name for her character, who predominantly has a killer instinct in the Frieren series. Now, Ubel isn’t completely evil and doesn’t qualify as the antagonist; rather, she is more of an anti-hero character in the story.
