What Happens to Jesse in The Last of Us?

Soon after Joel’s death, Tommy, Dina, and Ellie set out for Seattle one by one to find his killers and bring them to justice. Later, Jesse also left Jackson Town with Tommy the next day in order to help his friends avenge Joel’s death. In the live-action series, Tommy remains in Jackson town initially, and you can learn about the difference from the video game via the linked article. After persevering through adversities such as a snowstorm, Jesse managed to catch up with his friends in Seattle by trekking for a long time.
Jesse eventually crossed paths with soldiers of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), and during his battle, he encountered Ellie, who went out in search of Tommy at Hillcrest. The reunited friends headed back to Pinnacle Theatre, where Dina was recuperating. While Ellie initially said that Dina is sick, Jesse soon learned that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant with his child. When Ellie went out to search for Nora, Dina and Jesse looked out for each other at the theatre.
Once recovered, Jesse and Ellie embarked on a search for Tommy, but Ellie tried to convince Jesse that Tommy could take care of himself. However, Jesse didn’t want to leave Tommy alone, and so the duo split up again, with Jesse rescuing Tommy and Ellie seeking Abby.
Fortunately, Jesse found Tommy, and they reunited with Ellie at the Aquarium. Now that Tommy is back, they plan to escape Seattle. However, they didn’t realize they had to pay a price for all the deeds they committed in Seattle.
Does Jesse Die in The Last of Us?
Everything seemed right with the Jackson squad, who were planning to move out of Seattle and back home. However, Abby soon found out that her friends had been killed, and she finally came knocking at their door at the theatre. When Ellie was thanking Jesse, the pair heard a call for help from Tommy. The duo recklessly smashed their way into Tommy’s location but didn’t see what was coming next.
My friends’ problems are my problems!
Rushing their way through a door was a massive blunder, as Abby, without hesitation, put a bullet through Jesse’s face and ended his life on the spot. This sudden yet realistic death sequence left not only the gamers utterly shocked, but also the TV show viewers, as the showrunners adapted Jesse’s death in the final episode of The Last of Us Season 2. Jesse was a selfless and great friend of Ellie, but was killed off as a consequence of pursuing vengeance.
Many fans commented that Jesse didn’t deserve such a violent end after everything he did for his friends. As the live-action show is making plenty of changes, fans expected the creators to let Jesse survive. Jesse also made it clear that he had to survive no matter what for his future child in The Last of Us TV show. However, Jesse’s fate stays the same as in The Last of Us Part 2 game, as he gets killed in the same way by Abby in the end. Now Jesse’s sudden death is the next big loss for the Jackson community after Joel.
