The entry of Reliance Jio has led to a price war in the Indian telecom industry, with each company constantly trying to one-up its rivals by launching competitively priced recharge plans that offer higher voice and data benefits. In the face of cut-throat competition from rival operators, BSNL has today launched a new ‘Data Tsunami’ plan which costs just Rs. 98 and offers 1.5GB of mobile data per day and comes with a validity of 26 days.

The new data plan is available for prepaid subscribers and is now live across all BSNL circles throughout the country with immediate effect. The data-only plan offers mobile data at a rate of just Rs. 2.51/per GB, which is among the lowest data rates offered by any operator in the country right now.

BSNL’s new Rs. 98 plan goes head-to-head with Jio’s Rs. 149 data pack, which offers 1.5 GB data per day for 28 days at an average cost of Rs. 3.5/GB, and Airtel’s Rs. 149 prepaid data plan which offers 4G data at an average rate of around Rs. 5.3/GB. “BSNL provides efficient services at cheaper rates as per requirement of customers. This is a pure data STV which provides at a very economic rate at Rs. 2.51 per GB”, said BSNL Board’s Director, RK Mittal regarding the new ‘Data Tsunami’ plan.

However, do keep in mind that BSNL’s Rs. 98 plan does not offer any voice call or SMS benefits, unlike the corresponding recharge plans from Airtel and Jio. Moreover, BSNL’s new prepaid data plan only offers 2G/3G speed and not 4G, as the state-run telecom operator is yet to begin the rollout of 4G services in the country.
