Xiaomi has apparently filed for a design patent with the China Intellectual Property Association (CNIPA) for a smartphone case that would enable folks to charge their truly wireless earbuds using their handsets. Believed to have been first reported on by 91Mobiles, the unique gadget will apparently utilize the reverse charging feature available on certain smartphones, but it will be entirely wireless.
According to the report, the description on the CNIPA website reads, “This appearance design product is a mobile phone accessory, which can be installed on the mobile phone, used to store the earphone, and charge the headset”. As can be seen from the images published by the agency, the case comes with a raised housing to place the earbuds, but has two different designs to accommodate different styles of earphones.
While Xiaomi is known to release quirky products from time to time, it’s unlikely that the company will launch the aforementioned accessory any time soon, given that it doesn’t actually have a smartphone that supports wireless reverse charging. Having said that, one wouldn’t bet against the company introducing the feature in some of its more premium smartphones going forward.
Xiaomi recently demoed its super-fast 40W wireless-charging tech using a modified Mi 10 Pro with a 4,000mAh battery. The new technology apparently managed to juice-up the device in just 40 minutes, which is highly impressive for even wired charging systems. However, as things stand now, both the 40W wireless charging tech and the aforementioned smartphone case are still at their proof-of-concept stages, so we wouldn’t hold our breath for a commercial release of either product any time soon.
