After multiple delays due to the pandemic, Death Stranding 2 is finally available to play after six years. With the sequel getting widespread acclaim, you might be curious to know if Hideo Kojima plans to release another installment in the Death Stranding franchise. To find the answer, let’s go through Death Stranding 2’s ending and discuss Kojima’s thoughts on the third game. So, here’s everything we know about Death Stranding 3 so far and whether the game is happening or not
Death Stranding 2 Mid-Credits Scene Teases the Third Game

Death Stranding 2 features a mid-credit scene similar to superhero movies, which teases the future of the series. As the credits roll in, we see delivery bots running in a land taken over by nature again. We aren’t sure if it’s the same Australian continent, but clearly, a great amount of time has passed, as we see the DHV Magellan vessel is history now.
Then, we see Tomorrow (Elle Fanning) donning a porter suit and sitting near a Plate Gate. She talks about her love for porters and goes through her photo collection to show the happy ending of some of our favorite characters, such as Rainy with her newborn baby.
Then, she gets up and heads towards the Plate Gate, which hints that Tomorrow, Sam’s daughter, will embark on a mysterious journey on a new continent. As the ending teases, we might get Death Stranding 3 starring Elle Fanning as the game’s main protagonist in the future.
The final cutscene also coincides with Kojima’s statement before the game’s release, which we have discussed below.
Hideo Kojima Talks About Death Stranding 3
Ahead of Death Stranding: On the Beach’s release, Hideo Kojima confirmed that he already has a concept for Death Stranding 3 in an interview with VGC.
With the introduction of Plate Gates, Kojima-san has already sown the seeds for endless sequels in Death Stranding 2. Plate Gates are a kind of portal that can be utilized to travel between continents. “If I use this Plate Gate concept, I could make endless sequels,” said Kojima.
However, the auteur further stated that he doesn’t have plans to create numerous sequels; instead, he already has the concept ready for another sequel, Death Stranding 3. Kojima also confirmed that he won’t be helming the Death Stranding 3 project, possibly due to the growing pains of age. He remarked that he could pass the baton to another person and let them create sequels sometime in the future.
“I, of course, don’t have any plans to do that, but I already have a concept for another sequel. I am not going to make it myself, but if I passed it on to someone else, they could probably make it.”
At the time of writing, neither Kojima nor anyone from Kojima Productions has shared any plans for the third installment in the Death Stranding franchise. Kojima Productions is currently busy making OD (a horror game) with Xbox Studios and Physint (a stealth action game) with PlayStation. But we can be certain that we might hear more about Death Stranding 3 based on the post-credit scene and Kojima’s statements.
Without Kojima’s touch, we aren’t sure if Death Stranding 3 will feel the same as its predecessors. Nevertheless, we all want to experience more stories set in the Death Stranding universe. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
